I think he deserves credit for the victory over Germany. I don't think england was that good at the 2018 world cup but they got lucky with the draw and penalties and made it to the semis.Agree with this.
At what point do you start to give him credit?
World Cup semi final. Quarter finals at least of the Euros. Sailed through qualification for the Euros and on course to do similar for the World Cup next year.
His record is pretty damn remarkable for a **** manager.
His win pct is quite high though. Interestingly enough, the highest manager by this metric over 100 games is Fabio Capello and his stint is generally looked down upon by the English media and to some degrees some of the ex england internationals.Y.N.W.A!!!!!!

Exceptional teams going through international tournaments winning every game by a couple of goals and smashing teams left right and centre with fantastic football seems to be the exception rather than the rule.I think he deserves credit for the victory over Germany. The teams that win these tournaments will grind out results (and then put 7 past Brazil
) and thus far Southgate's England have proven to be very good at grinding.

Agree absolutely with your statement that realistically teams won't batter their way through everyone in a tournament.Exceptional teams going through international tournaments winning every game by a couple of goals and smashing teams left right and centre with fantastic football seems to be the exception rather than the rule.

But have a look again at the fixtures england won. They thrashed Panama, edged past Tunisia and lost to Belgium in the group stages. They then scraped past Columbia 4-3 on penalties which is of course always a lottery.
A lottery in which an amateur team could quite easily beat a professional team.
They then beat Sweden comfortably but lost to Croatia and then again to Belgium.
It's fine margins but they could have so easily deservedly gone home against Columbia after drawing with them over 120 mins and then the story is seen to be different.
I don't think it would have changed the reality though and that is that in 2018, they had a relatively easy path to the final (avoiding powerhouses like Spain, Germany, France, Brazil, Argentina, Portugal) but lost every time they came up against a comparably strong team (Croatia and Belgium).
They got to the semis with 3 victories, a draw and a loss. That's not the same as grinding out consistence victories, simply one more win than non win event.Last edited by Corndog; 30-06-21, 09:28 PM.Y.N.W.A!!!!!!

Freuler straight red card
Don't think that's right.....seen a lot worse. Phillips went in with the studs the other day for England and only got a yellow, and that had real intent. Nothing like that here.....think Oliver bought into the reaction and distance of the challengeLast edited by McDermotX; 02-07-21, 05:36 PM."I will make the boys feel your support"

Never a red, Swiss were right in this game. Bolloxed now after their extra time the other night. Oliver killed what could have been a very good ending, made his decision too quick and it was never getting over turned.Comment
