If that's true, I don't get it.

I remember before the world cup in 2018, they were downplaying things, saying it was a time to get experience for players who would be mature by euro 2020 when england should be able to mount a serious challenge.

Here we are with the likes of Kane and Sterling in their prime. And there has been no improvement in their play from what I can see. They still struggle to break down average teams and are **** against top sides.

I can understand sides not wanting to swap managers for continuity reasons between this euros and the Qatar WC, I article seems to suggest that this euros was a free hit and it's about the WC. If that is the case why offer Southgate a new contract now? His current one runs until after the WC why not wait and assess performance after that?

I find the England situation very odd, for years England were going to win the World Cup the media and fans kept saying, at present the expectation seems lower at than I can remember for quite a while, but last time out they finished 4th at the WC which is as close as they have been to winning it since 1966, while I think they vastly overperformed at the last WC, that kind of observation doesn't usually bother your average England fan or the media, so why are the expectations so low (or realistic for once)?
