Mental from Southgate subbing players on for pens. Was absolutely doomed. Particularly such young kids.

England were second best tonight, after a really strong opening 30 mins they were poor. Chiesa going off was the only thing that ensures it didn’t end in 90 mins. He was brilliant.
    Modifying post.

Generally you've got to score most of them, but you're never going to lose it by missing the 1st.

TBF.....I would put a week's wages on Sterling choking it

              Horror show pens.

Experience and bottle > training ground technique.

              Ridiculous from Southgate.

Sterling was subbed off, wasn't he? I wouldn't have had him pass one to the GK regardless but thought he was taken off

I think he has a decent attempt at a proper top flight level. By far the highlight whenever I caught the Arse

I think that there are a couple of mind sets one is that you put your strongest taker first to get off to a good start the other is that you save them fort the pressure pens. England historically seem to have gone with their strongest takers first.

The truth is they just didn't have great options, I think Trippier and Mount would probably have taken them if they had been on the pitch. I was also surprised that Walker and Henderson were the guys taken off at the death, while I don't think either are great penalty takers, they are experienced players how have been involved in these situations before.

As I said I feel sorry for guys like Rashford and Sancho just being brought on to take a penalty as bringing them on for pens you are basically saying they are a banker rto score one, which puts a huge amount of pressure on, I think that may work if you have and old experienced striker (I remember Teddy Sheringham doing that a couple of times for various clubs), I don't know about Sancho's record with them but Rashford has missed a few over last couple of years sop I wouldn't consider him a banker.

As I said earlier it's odd to me that Sterling and Grealish don't take them ahead of Saka. I don't mean to have a dig at Sterling, but as one of the attacking mainstays of the team and an experienced player, I would be expecting him to be prepared to take one. If you put out a side that effectively has 6 or 7 defensive players you would expect the 3 or 4 attacking players tobe the first to step up.

It isn't though. It may not be uncommon, but it's certainly not a given.

Well I am very happy, hard luck to England and I thought they were a team to be proud of throughout the tournament.

This exorcises the defeats in the final against France and Spain in 2000 and 2012.

No he was still on at the end.

I agree that I wouldn't have backed him to score but surely he has known for months that he would likely be a mainstay of the team and likely to be involved if a game went to pens so should be preparing for this not just for the few weeks of the tournament but for the last year or so if not longer.

Alot has been made of the selflessness and togetherness of this squad but surely the senior attacking players should be setting an example.

Sterling and Grealish are the two obvious ones you'd have tagged to take the 5th penalty before Saka
