As an aside, it’s good to see Sturbridge on the TV.

Var didn’t show the ref, right? It was an on field decision that punditry said is not enough to give a penalty but also is not enough for var to overrule the ref apparently. I hate that clear and obvious error rule- you’re already spending time reviewing it, so just say whether it’s a pen or not.

It's BS because if the on field ref gives a pen the only way it's overturned is if there is no contact.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Sorry, yes. It was just the video released by var that clipped off the contact by Haaland.

He did the exact same thing to win a pen for Norway v Scotland. It’s so obvious he instigates contact and then goes down. He has gamed the system.

Seems to have a fresh take on everything which is badly needed.

Ahhh sorry ya, I see what ya mean. Ya I thought that too, when watching the replay- like it’s not clear if they only considered the tail end of the incident or looked at the whole thing. This is why we need to be able to hear what’s being said. It’s not clear why they’re giving a decision- is it because they feel it’s a foul, or cos they feel it’s not clear and obvious? I also thought the chelsea lads were fouled in the buildup- (caicedo I think) got shoved, and then crashed into his teammate. It was softish, but no more so than the penalty foul.

Even if we can’t hear their live discussions on the incident, when they deliver their verdict to the ref, we should at least hear that, so we know why they have/haven’t overruled a decision, instead of just listening to carragher guess why.

For pens, no matter what, let the ref review the footage. Not VAR, the ref. He can decide then if he missed a detail. Leave VAR for offsides and the like.

That’s a really simple solution. They will never go for that!

Let everyone see it. Show it on a huge digital screen, mic the ref and let him explain his though process and amounted the decision.

                        That bit is so pivotal.

At least the thought process is out there and explained. You can still choose to disagree with it, but at least you know what you are disagreeing with.

Which is why it works well in Rugby.

Similar happened against United with Gvardiol pushing a United player, stopping him getting back into the box. It seems they instigate all the pushing and shoving during set plays, then wait for the right moment to throw themselves to the ground. Hopefully it gets called out soon.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

It won't tho, never does, like the middle of the park fouls, never did, dark arts whatever..

I feel like if they did have audio, the var guidelines in general would come under a lot more scrutiny.

Imagine hearing “not sure that was a foul, but it’s not clear and obvious so stick with your on field decision, and give the penalty”. The argument of we don’t want to re-referee the game is nonsense- they’ve stopped the game anyway, for var to look into it, so they should go ahead and do that without being influenced by the on field referee. We need to not look at it as re-refereeing it, and instead think of it as part of the overall refereeing process.

If they want to talk about something not being clear and obvious, they should give the benefit to one of the players, not to the on field refereeing decision- eg it needs to be a clear and obvious foul for it to be a penalty, etc..

Which of their players will go down softly for the pen they will get against us after the international break?
