Future of football -70% of turnover

Story in the Evening Standard tonight is that UEFA are pushing for a ruling that clubs can only spend 70% of their turnover on wages and transfers. This would have meant Chelsea spending £100mil less on wages and players in the last fiscal year. It would affect us but to a lesser extent obviously. The idea is to level the playing field and obviously stop Chelsea buying everything. If it comes in the Academy and Rafa's plan of buying up younger talent will be invaluable.

Very true. Manure would have a very large transfer fund as their wages bill is something like 50% whereas Chelsea's is something like 90%.

I only have one question, couldn`t Roman just put his face on the shirt and pay £150M a year for it?
I guess they then have to pay tax for it, but covering that wouldn`t set Roman back by much.

Off the top of my head we spend about 25% of turnover on players and our wage bill is about 55% so we won't be too badly affected.

United and Real would be laughing though. Particularly Real with their new £107m per year TV deal. Our turnover was £121m last year.

nah he'd just hike the prices at Chelsea Village and buy all the rooms out for 1000years.


I suspect Chelsea will complain that the ruling is a restriction of trade but it would certainly cause a stir if bought in.

i did a dissertation on this topic, 55% salary to turnover seems about right for Liverpool, although in the early houllier years it got worryingly high, especially when we frequently missed the champions league places

How can this be enforced?
If liverpool bought players on the basis that we will reach the quarter finals of the CL and budgeted for this level of revenue from the CL within the 70% rule taking into account the new player's wages. In the event we got knocked out, our wages level may breach the 70% level. This could act as a disincentive to bringing in players and may therfore force clubs to focus on generating revenue from elsewhere e.g merchandising. This is all well and , good for the big clubs, but what chance would Wigan have for example with the size of their fanbase?
