    Michael Ballack = Faustino Asprilla

    Watched the Chav v Arsenal game yesterday on the telly.

    What struck me was that the game totally passed Michae Ballack by.......again. The lad has got undoubted class but at the moment he's like a fish out of water. For me - having Ballack and Lampturd in the same midfield is a total non-starter; they are effectively one and the same player. The balance in their midfield is all wrong without any wide players and Mourinho's insistence of playing Ballack will cost them the Premier League title.

    IMO - Chelsea were doing very well without Ballack - and he was an aquisition which didn't need to be made; much like when Newcastle bought Asprilla when KK was in charge. The dynamic of the team changed and they lost the league when they really should have wrapped it up comfortably.

    Michael Ballack - whilst being a fine player may well cost the Chavs the title - a label which most people associate with Faustino Asprilla.

    I agree with you Howard. It's obvious that Maureen bought Ballack to ensure that he didn't move to one of Chelsea's rivals. Terrible signing who's ruined the balance of the team. You simply can't play 4 central midfielders and get away with it every game.

      Faustino Asprilla was brilliant for Newcastle though. He was just a certifiable nutter.

        I think that Mourinho thought he would be able to bring in a new right back or that Geremi would step up this season. He seems quite hapy to have width come from his fullbacks - Ashley Cole has been doing a good job for them in this regard.

        The thing is that He does need to make a choice his team can support either Ballack or Shevchenko and be the best team in the PL. When both play you are right they completely lack any balance. They seem to have found a slight improveent by putting Essien to right back in the second half against both Arsenal and Man United - so perhaps there is a way of making it work and it will just take time (or a new RB - hopefully not Alves).

          They also got rid of Gallas and he is the best defender in the PL IMO and they have not replaced him.
          Just believe and you never know what will happen.

          According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

              He may well be one of the best CB's in the league but he didn't play all that often for Chelsea and often when he did it was at LB. Ashley Cole is far better in that position, so I think they did Ok out of that deal.

                Cole is more a wing back than a real defending left back. Gallas is better defending than Cole is and Gallas helped out Chelsea's central defenders a lot last season.
                Just believe and you never know what will happen.

                  Ashley Cole is a first rate defender. Watch the United game and see how well he deal with Ronaldo. He started as very much a converted midfielder but now he is a genuinely world class leftback. Also Mourinho's sides often get their width from their fullbacks, which means for Chelsea Cole is the better choice, it is an equally valid tactic (particularly for a top club) to defend by pushing back the opposition wingers/wide midfield players.

                  Also Gallas at Arsenal seems to have unbalanced their defence. I'm sure it will get sorted out in time, but they have had as much trouble this season getting a good CB pairing playing consistantly well as we have.

                  In the end I think both teams came out of the deal no worse off.

                    Ballack is a qulity player, but I think they are sufferring from the same problem England have when Lampard and Gerrard are paired in the centre. Both want to play in the same role but there is only space for one of them. Given that Lampard has limited ability (at best) to be versatile, it falls to Ballack and Gerrard to be played out of position and adapt as best as they can, given their talents.

                      You are right of course but both of the examples you cite smack of poor management in terms of personel, balance and shape of the team.

                          Good post and something I've been thinking for a while.

                          Chelsea bought Ballack partly because he is a great player but partly because they could and could also stop other teams buying him. They didn't necessarily need him, not with the amount of players Chavski have in that position. It only upsets the balace of the team.

                          Sometimes big money moves don't work for whatever reason. Look at Veron firstly to United and then to Chavski. I think that Ballack could be off sooner or later.

                            he would have fitted into Scums team a lot better. This is why they bought him.

                              Well he won't be success with this policy he used in the newcastle game.
                              ........Michael Ballack's limp performance - he leapt out of the way of a crunching Nicky Butt tackle in the early stages - earned him some heckles from Chelsea's frustrated support.
