    Rotation

Hasn't been an issue for a while, yet not long ago it was the only thing on peoples minds when it seemed it wasn't working, so why is it not the big topic any more?

Is it because we looked fresh & ready vs Bolton yesterday, whereas Bolton looked totally jaded and lacking energy using the same practically unchanged side for the 4 games over the xmas period, and therefore proved Rafa right when he said wait for the second half of the season when rotation of players would come into its own?

Will it be much better next season when the new players have bedded in after a full season, with a full pre-season behind them, with only 1 or 2 additions to the squad over the summer, with a not so daunting start to the PL, should we therefore expect to be right up there this time next year then?

Is rotation even an issue any more?

It's more of an issue in the early season in my opinion because the team needs time to gel and if you're constantly changing it then results and consistency will suffer. The payoff is that the team is supposed to be fresher later in the season.

I think you play your best team for that game all the time. He's been doing it for a few games now and look what benefits we've got

If there tired fair enough but only in the second half of the season none of this early season rotation because they are tired

nothing is an issue when you win. But when you continue to get bad results which had been the case, people will rightly look for reasons.

Rotating of strikers is never a good thing for me, they thrive on confidence which is built by goals & an extended run of games.

Sure, but under Rafa they work very hard, as did Rushie, but now there are more games.

I think it's a necessity, but not what I would prefer.
I would like the strikers to develop a sort of partnership knowing what and where the other would be...sadly not possible now I think.

I don't think we're not making the same number of changes now as we were early in the season. Some of that was enforced by injuries, some of it I think was Rafa preferring to rotate heavily earlier on rather than have to rest players toward the business end of the season.

I was going to make the point myself about how fresh we were compared to Bolton. We were able to bring in quality players who were much fresher and they just couldn't match our tempo.

Another great thing about rotation is it also cuts down on injuries. The occasional serious injury can't be avoided (eg Momo), and there will always be slight knocks where you don't want to risk players (eg Bellamy recently), but we have really reduced the number of stress/strain type injuries we suffer.

I think that the problem at the begining of the season was that absolutely noone stood out as being in form and so a definite starter. In particular the defence was shocking. Despite regular changes recently all of the defenders have played well and we have looked good.

Rotation was never the real cause of our problems at the begining of the season. It may well have not been the best strategy to get us playing well in the short term but it seems to have bedded in players and ended up with us looking like a very good team. It is much easier to pick games to rotate players in when you are winning - Man United did really well with it over Christmas as they have a relatively thin squad but still picked up results over a very hectic period.

With the form we're in, second place (or even 1st) isn't out of the question by any means now. Rafa's rotation policy seems to have paid.

Could we end the season like last year ? No doubt upcoming matches against Chelsea and Manure at home hold the key for that.

it never was the issue, the issue we had in the begining of the season is that our best players were off form, complaining about tiredness from the wc and a long season, it's not long since stevie found his gear, and the same can be said about alonso, rotation had nothing to do with it...

The problem with rotation this season is all our difficult away games were together at the beginning of the season so our season never really had the chance to get going. Add to that the form of our key players and we were up against it from the start.

I think this is what Rafa does all the time. Don't think he believes there is a difference between "team and squad" as the way he rotates to keep the players fresh for the whole season, if you're not on the pitch you're just part of the team that are preparing for the next match and the rest of the season

He still is rotating a fair bit to be honest. 4 changes for the Bolton game and 3 for the spurs match but rotation is never going to be a problem when we're winning, is it?
If we had dropped points yesterday Rafa would have been slammed for dropping Garcia, our matchwinner in the previous match and Sami would all of a sudden be old, slow and past it again.
I don't beleive rotation was ever a major problem, it was simply the form of our best players
