I agree entirely with that sentiment. We blew £20m on Crouch, Bellamy & Pennant (positions we needed to fill), but imagine how much closer that £20m would have got us to David Villa or Daniel Alves.

The front 6 could have looked like:

      --------------Kuyt/ Fowler--------Villa/ Garcia / Kewell/ Gonzalez

      Gonzalez/ Kewell------Momo------------Alonso-----SG/Garcia/ Zenden

      or

      --------------Kuyt/ Fowler--------Garcia / Kewell/ Gonzalez

      Gonzalez/ Kewell------Momo /Alonso-----SG------Garcia/ Alves

A bit thin in squad terms, but much more goalscoring threat.

It's getting to sound like the 2002 Summer, where we "blew" £20M on Diouf, Diao & Cheyrou!

Yup! Sadly that's too close for comfort. However, as we saw with Cisse and Morientes, Rafa isn't afraid to ship people out if they don't deliver. I hope he sticks to that policy and doesn't end up like GH with blind faith is players that weren't doing it.

That wasn't quite £20m...but close enough!

Sometimes being seen as world class and from abroad goes against you in this league. Shevchenko being the prime example.

Having a striker who knows the league well is a must and I think Bent could be a great purchase IF we were in for him.

But paying £30M for Shevvers has totally screwed the rest of us, Charlton are going to want way over the odds for what he was worth, just by comparing the two of them in the PL, and what each has done in the PL.

If we shipped out Bellamy, Crouch and brought in Bent for £7m + A N Other top striker (e.g. Villa) I'd be happy for now, as long as we got another top striker in the summer when Robbie goes.

not really, bent has never been a world player of the year and consistantly one of the worlds top scorers for a number of years
Bill shankly to Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee:
'Take that poof bandage off, and what do you mean YOUR knee, it's LIVERPOOL'S knee !'

"Sorry, boss, I should have kept my legs together," said Lawrence. "No, Tommy, your mother should have kept her legs together!," replied Shankly.

                    * After Tommy Lawrence had let in a fluke goal between his legs

Charlton know nobody will pay £30m for him...not even Chelsea.

Owen would of course be my number one option to play with Kuyt if he can get back to full fitness.

All of you probably know about my many post about Owen but this isn't about any Owen loving thing.

Owen fits in with everything that we are missing upfront. Pace, excellent in the box and is very clever on the pitch.

I doubt that Rafa will make a move for him again
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

Think of the difference, was being touted at less than £10M, possibly £12M, now it's reported at least £18M, yet has done not a lot that improves his stock, except the chavs paying over the odds for someone that the manager didn't even want or need.

Owen, Kuyt, Villa & Cisse would do me - but I doubt that would happen.
Owen, Kuyt, Villa and Bent / Anelka would do too. Two big men, 2 little un's with plenty of pace and goals mixed in.

Even Owen, Kuyt, Villa and Ronaldo / Raul would do. But ideally we need someone who can head a ball hard and accurately too.

Not quite the same, if we choose to sell Crouch or Bellers we will make a small profit.

Pennant is starting to improve and is worth retaining as alternative to Gerrard untill we sign another.

I wasn't meaning it literally, but use of similar language is what caught my eye, the amount & 3 players being involved.
