      bleat, bleat, bleat....................................

WANDERERS chairman Phil Gartside wants the Football Association to take a closer look at comments made by Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez before the two clubs met on New Year's Day.

Gartside was angered by reports prior to the game in which the Anfield boss suggested Wanderers' tactics bordered on the illegal.

Liverpool rode out comfortable 3-0 victors on the day, but more than the result, it was Benitez's outburst that left a bitter taste in the mouth of the Wanderers chief.
      Advertisement continued...

"There was a series of press articles attributed to him that, if they are true, would be out of order," said Gartside.

"The FA should take a look at them through their compliance unit."

The incident was the latest in a continuing war of words between the two clubs over recent seasons, and Gartside claims the issue boils down to a lack of respect at what the club have achieved over the last few seasons.

"Look at our record. Over the past three years we have been consistent and one of only four teams to finish in the top 10 each season," he said.

"People have got to accept that we are there on merit. It would be nice to get the credit we deserve sometimes."

Benitez had said in the build-up to the New Year's Day match between the two sides at Anfield: "Bolton could not play this way in Spain."

"Every free kick, corner and throw-in would be a foul, but in England the referees allow it and they take advantage of these things."

Sam Allardyce has also had enough of seeing his side continually belittled Writing in his column for Zoo Magazine, he said: "We've been labelled a direct team again recently, so I've tried to make sure the public know that Rafa Benitez and Glenn Roeder are only using it as an excuse. Their clubs are supposed to beat Bolton, so they've tried to persuade people that we're some type of long-ball team.

"The thing is, the technology we've got now, especially ProZone, proves conclusively that we're not. Unfortunately, even though we've got these stats, some parts of the media don't want to believe it. Some people just don't like us. But I don't worry about not getting the credit we should, because we're Bolton - we're never going to get it.

"Of course, we do go direct sometimes. We've beaten Liverpool a few times recently because they can't cope with the way we maximise our strengths and minimise theirs. They can't live with that, so they make an excuse that's pretty feeble.

"The most disappointing thing for me is that you expect the media to latch on to such criticism when it comes from a manager; they want to believe he's right because it's controversial. Journalists will believe everything a manager says, so they think they're writing the truth - and that then becomes the public perception of our team."

So one of Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs has finished out of the top 10 in the last 3 years?

Two, seeing as he is suggesting Bolton are one of the four.

I might go and dig up the old tables to verify exactly.

Thing is I'd hardly be crowing about finishing 8th 6th and 8th if I were them. Mid table.
