    Pre-Match Build Up - Arsenal - 09 Jan 2007

    Feels like deja-vu!!

    Liverpool v Arsenal

Liverpool goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek will keep his place for his side's rearranged Carling Cup quarter-final.

Craig Bellamy could return up front while defenders Sami Hyypia and Fabio Aurelio are also pushing for a recall.

Arsenal welcome back Cesc Fabregas, who was suspended for Saturday's FA Cup win against Liverpool at Anfield, and Abou Diaby returns after eight months out.

William Gallas could return after a thigh injury but Emmanuel Adebayor and Freddie Ljungberg are out.

    # Arsenal's Tomas Rosicky:

"In almost every game we have created so many chances and not taken them. Compare that to the game on Saturday when we were very productive.

"For example, I don't feel I played a good game even though I scored twice

"This is a very good team but we have to be smarter. We have to avoid mistakes and take our chances."

    # Liverpool's Dirk Kuyt:

"We deserved more than we got on Saturday but Arsenal are one of the better teams in the Premier League so we know it will be tough," he said.

"I hope that first defeat gives us an extra boost.

"Players always want to win trophies. There are a few more to fight for and the Carling Cup is one of them."

    Teams:

Liverpool (from): Dudek, Finnan, Carragher, Hyypia, Agger, Riise, Aurelio, Luis Garcia, Pennant, Alonso, Gerrard, Gonzalez, Bellamy, Kuyt, Crouch, Fowler, Reina.

Arsenal (from): Almunia, Eboue, Poom, Lehmann, Hoyte, Toure, Senderos, Clichy, Hleb, Silva, Flamini, Rosicky, Henry, Walcott, Van Persie, Baptista, Djourou, Diaby, Fabregas.

Benitez left to rue inferiority complex against Arsenal
    By Andy Hunter
    Published: 09 January 2007

The Carling Cup now represents the last realistic hope of domestic silverware for Liverpool this season but when Arsenal make a rapid return to Anfield in the quarter-final tonight, it is an inferiority complex that Rafael Benitez's side should be aiming to lift.

A brittle defence of the FA Cup on Saturday exposed, once again, a reality the Premiership table at present disguises; namely, that while the weak and the mediocre of England pose fewer problems to Liverpool, they remain the poor relation of the elite top four; a description that is more applicable to their football than their finances.

Benitez bemoaned a lack of resources for his side's weekend performance, an argument that would have brooked no complaints had the comparison been with Chelsea or, to a lesser degree, Manchester United, even though he spent more last summer than Sir Alex Ferguson and will soon be reimbursed with the riches of Dubai International Capital. To suggest Arsenal are operating on a different financial plain, however, when their match-winner Tomas Rosicky cost the manager, Arsène Wenger, as much as Liverpool paid for Jermaine Pennant, or when Alexander Hleb and Robin Van Persie combined cost a similar sum to Xabi Alonso, was at best misleading and diverts attention away from the paucity of Liverpool's performances against their established rivals this season.

The Liverpool manager is yet to glean a point from Chelsea, United or Arsenal this season and while those defeats have all arrived away from Anfield, the display in the FA Cup third round, when the home side reverted to the long-ball game that so infuriates Benitez if Bolton play it, showed their fragile composure against quality opposition.

"We haven't managed to beat Chelsea, Manchester United or Arsenal in the major competitions this season and that does worry us," Alonso said yesterday. "In the Premiership, they all still have to come to Anfield and we have to show we can get results against them."

Tonight's rearranged fifth-round tie offers Liverpool an instant opportunity to soothe Saturday's wound but even success may not heal their problems against the leading lights given that, as the victor in the FA Cup, Arsenal will return with the pressure off and with a few expensive feet up. Thierry Henry may be excused a starting role despite the tour of Anfield that delivered Arsenal's third goal on Saturday - "we will come back with a different team but we want to win the game," said Wenger, who has Cesc Fabregas available after suspension - but for Benitez, who will retain Jerzy Dudek in goal even though his surprise inclusion backfired in the first meeting, the prospect of resting a host of key players has disappeared.

"It's important to stay in the competition and to keep the key players fit because we are thinking of the Champions' League and Premier League as well," Benitez said. "You could say we will rest Steven Gerrard or Xabi Alonso but maybe we don't have the possibilities."

Anfield officials are lobbying Fifa in their attempt to sign Javier Mascherano from West Ham on loan with a view to a permanent summer transfer. Liverpool are hoping that the ruling that prevents a player signing for three clubs in one season can be waived.

Liverpool lay welcome mat as Sissoko nears fitness

      James Ducker

      # Everton targeted for comeback
      # Kuyt says Arsenal have mental edge

Mohamed Sissoko is hopeful of playing again at the start of next month after a two-month lay-off with a dislocated shoulder, although having left his Liverpool team-mates fighting on four fronts, the midfield player could return to find that there is only one trophy still realistically up for grabs. No wonder Rafael Benítez, the Liverpool manager, rates the Mali player so highly.

Fourteen points adrift of Manchester United in the Barclays Premiership and seemingly out of the title race, defeat by Arsenal in tonight’s rescheduled Carling Cup quarter-final at Anfield — only three days after they were beaten at home by the same opponents in the FA Cup — would leave Liverpool with only the Champions League to pursue.

Of course, Liverpool were not in an entirely dissimilar situation during Benítez’s first season in charge at Anfield, when, famously, his team went on to lift the European Cup, but given that there were such high expectations on Merseyside during the summer, it is a scenario that is unlikely to sit comfortably with the club’s supporters.

There is no single explanation for Liverpool’s difficulties this season, but as they prepare to try to avenge Saturday’s 3-1 loss, their poor record against Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United is at least partly to blame, even if, in their defence, Premiership defeats this season by the “big three” have come away from home.

“We haven’t managed to beat Chelsea, Manchester United or Arsenal in the major competitions this season, and that’s something that worries us,” Xabi Alonso, the midfield player, said. “Against the big teams, we aren’t performing or getting the results that we might have expected. In the Premiership, they all still have to come to Anfield and we have to show we can get results against them.”

Dirk Kuyt, the forward, believes that Arsenal will hold the upper hand mentally after their impressive FA Cup third-round victory, but both he and Alonso are adamant that defeat has heightened the Liverpool players’ desire to win tonight.

“Maybe their win can give Arsenal a psychological advantage, but the defeat gives us an extra incentive and an extra boost to want to win,” Kuyt said. “We just have to keep going and try to win in the Carling Cup.”

Benítez is expected to keep faith with Jerzy Dudek, the goalkeeper, although if the manager needed a fillip yesterday in the wake of his side’s FA Cup exit, Sissoko’s claim that he hopes to be fit in time for the Merseyside derby at home to Everton on February 3 was well timed.

The influential midfield anchor, who returned to training this week, has been sidelined since November 8 after he dislocated a shoulder in the previous round of the Carling Cup against Birmingham City. “I’ve worked hard to get better and now I’m feeling OK,” Sissoko said.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have left their pursuit of Javier Mascherano in the hands of the club’s lawyers as they seek a resolution to a Fifa ruling that has complicated the Argentina midfield player’s prospective move from West Ham United.

Fifa, the world governing body, maintained last night that Mascherano would not be able to play for Liverpool this season in the event that he joins the club, most probably on loan, because the 22-year-old has played for two other sides — Corinthians and West Ham — since July 1 last year.

Article 5.3 states that, although a player can be registered for three clubs during the period from July 1 to June 30, he is eligible to play in official matches for only two clubs during that time.

Fifa said last night that it had yet to be contacted by Liverpool, who are expected to highlight previous cases in which the ruling has apparently not applied and argue that the law constitutes a restraint of trade.

      Liverpool (possible; 4-4-2): J Dudek — S Finnan, S Hyypia, J Carragher, F Aurélio — J Pennant, X Alonso, S Gerrard, M González — D Kuyt, C Bellamy.

      Arsenal (4-4-2): M Almunia — E Eboué, J Djourou, P Senderos, G Clichy — A Hleb, A Diaby, M Flamini, T Rosicky — J Baptista, T Henry.

      Referee: M Atkinson.

Television: live on Sky Sports 1, from 7.30pm. Kick-off 7.45pm.

Dudek to stay in goal as Benitez keeps word

        By Tim Rich
        Last Updated: 1:15am GMT 09/01/2007

Despite an indifferent performance in Saturday's FA Cup defeat by Arsenal, Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez says Jerzy Dudek will be retained in goal against the same opposition in tonight's Carling Cup quarter-final.

Dudek's heroics in the 2005 European Cup final against Milan in Istanbul have ensured forever his place in Anfield's affections. However, his displays since then have been sporadic and sometimes error-prone.

Dudek performed reasonably well in the half-dozen Premiership games he was given last season but in the three cup matches of varying degrees of importance Dudek has played in this campaign, he has conceded six goals. And there were some at Anfield on Saturday evening who thought he might have prevented at least one of Arsenal's goals.

However, Benitez is not prepared to renege on the pre-season promises he made to his reserve keeper. "Jerzy was promised at the beginning of the season that he would play in all our [domestic] cup ties and we will be sticking with that," he said.
        advertisement

"Jerzy had a decent game in the first match; he didn't have much to do, just make a couple of saves."

Liverpool striker Dirk Kuyt may not have meant to criticise the Polish goalkeeper, but when he said of Arsenal, "they made three chances and got three goals and that was the difference", it would have stung. For a resilient and likeable goalkeeper, tonight is a big occasion — as it is for his club.

Ever since goals from Kenny Dalglish and Alan Hansen won them their first League Cup in 1981, Liverpool have mined the competition for a rich seam of silverware. There have been eight further finals since and with the shadow of Barcelona blocking their path in the Champions League, Benitez recognises that the Carling Cup is his best route to a trophy — something he has delivered at Valencia or Liverpool in four of the last five seasons.

"Tuesday will be a different game. Maybe I will make a few changes to the team I originally had in my head," he said after Saturday's defeat. "It is more important to stay in the Carling Cup now."

Why do the BBC etc always just blatantly lie when they do the squads? They dont even look for any proper info and just type out the first names that come into their heads. You'd think being the BBC they'd come up with something better than that. ****s.

              Rant over.

                So true.

I went to the game on Saturday telling everyone van Persie was suspended - cos it said so on the Beeb. I felt a bit of a goon when we arrived to see van Persie warming up and in the starting XI.

They just guess the squads and it appears they guess who's suspended too.

Can't say I'm overly enthusiastic about tonight's game. If I didn't have an automatic ticket I'd stay at home and watch 'Soapstar Superstar' instead...

Are you working there? Where's it filmed? That Gemma's a bit of alright and I'd probably give the dark haired bird from Emmerdale one as well even though she's got a big nose.

Aye, Granada on Quay Street. I've been going on about it, Clancy-style, in the Gemma Atkinson thread in the NSFW forum. I went on Friday night. Their green room is right next door to my office so I see em all every day.
