    Putting Recent Events in Perspective

With Tuesday's result, we have look at from a different perspective.

We have to understand that Wenger first built his first team with quality players in their early to mid 20's when he arrived. this gave him time to invest in his academy. there was no pressure for the youth to come through straight away. Added to this was full support from the board.

Toure, Eboue, fabregas, Sendaros, etc have been @ Arsenal for 5 years plus.

It was only in the last 12 to 18 months that we just started to build our own academy players after Houllier's mess.

Everyone keeps going on about how well Arsenal's 'kids' played the other night but i thought the 2 players that won them the game were Aliadiere and Baptista, they made the difference. Baptista with the 4 goals and Aliadiere with a goal and a few assists to boot.

Fabregas, Walcott, Denilson etc were pretty quiet actually but yes they have some brilliant young talent coming through dere, no doubt about it.

I also thought that Fabregas was brought in from Barca about 3 years ago.

Farbregas was 3 year ago but the others were bought and farmed out to Belgium apart from Sendaros & Djourou

Spot on - we were undone by the 2 up front. We just lacked organisation at the back and defended with a high line with crap/slow players who offered no protection. The fact was the rest of their team was poor except for Toure who kept the defence organised. It was Toure who stopped them from conceding 6 goals. The Arsenal midfield was poor and I hope certain people now see that Fabregas is not better than Alonso and is nowhere near his level of ability yet.

And Walcott, well I expected him to tear us apart given the line-up that was put out. But he was awful and tried to do way too much. I'm glad we didn't buy him (and not at the price Arsenal paid for him). Something tells me he may become a Pennant - a hot prospect who never really made it. There's too many parallels between the two of them

aliadiere is the second longest serving player at arsenal after ljungberg.

senderos was bought in 2003 from sevette for 2.5m
eboue signed in jan 2005 for 1.25
toure signed in 2002 from KSK Beveren for 150,000
fabregas signed in 2003 from barca on a free

I think this is a fallacy

wengers 1st title winning side was in 1997-8

It consisted in the main of older players - the back 5 of seaman/dixon/winterburn/keown/adams being inherited from george graham and in 4 of the 5 cases bought for a large fee.

add to that petit/overmars/bergkamp - all top internationals, signed for big money (bigger fees in that day than rafa has EVER) lashed out. plus anelka and viera - two younger gems signed for lesser but significant fees and you should see that wengers 1st title side was a "bought" side.

the same is true of fergusons 1st title winning scum side of 1992-3: schmeicjel/irwin/parker/pallister/bruce/ince/keane/kanchelskis/hughes cantona - all being expensive signings - only giggs and lee sharpe of that side being home grown

ONLY from this position of strength and established quality could young players be integrated - under far less pressure than some youngsters at lfc have been - and future title winning sides gradually built.

Thats how things were for many years at LFC.

the only other recent title winning sides are blackburn and chavski are indisputeably "bought" sides.

conclusion: if you want to win the title - buy the best ESTABLISHED players - then sustain it by the gradual introduction of quality young players into an established winning side. the buyin has to come 1st.
