It's a strange one and maybe you're right, Demento may well know something about the player that we don't. But if it turns out that he's out of favour because Demento rates Evra as a better player then we should pounce.

Yeah that's the other side of the coin of course. Evra has been really good this year and is much better going forward than Heinze.

I read in the gossip columns on the BBC site that Spurs are ahead of Manure in the race for him surely not and surely we have made a bid for him and he would come to us ahead of Spurs

IMHO £10m for any left-back is ****ing ludicicrous. You can name on one hand the number of left backs who have made a serious difference to the ability of a team

Not really. Look at the hideously overrated Ashley Cole at Chelsea. I know there are other, more significant factors, but he hasn't improved them one jot.

So what about the estimated £12m-£13m for Alves for right back PLY? You against signing him? Just interested in what you think mate?

Bale is an out and out left full-back - Alves is a "lateral" and hence brings a lot more to the attacking table.

I wouldn’t describe Bale as 'an out and out left full-back' his attacking attributes are very good as well. And if you add-in his dead ball ability, he offers something that not many full back’s can offer. He’s already scored 5 league goals this season.

5 free kicks innit? I've only seen him in very small highlights packages, and he looks like he can cross a ball - but he doesn't appear to be a rampaging, attacking full back? Certainly not in the mould of Alves?

4 set pieces and one from open play I think.

He might not be a rampaging, attacking full back (yet) but he seems very comfortable with his attacking responsibilities.

i also like the fact that he seems to be very capable defensivley.

obviously alves can attack, but can he defend for ****?

If he was being bought as a right back then I would say don't do it. However , it was mooted that Alves would play a more dynamic role on the right of midfield whilst providing cover for Finnan at right back as well then he may be worth it.

IMHO competent full backs can be bought a lot cheaper than £10m , and those that cost £10m+ do not give the team the additional value reflected in their price. I would suggest that this is particularly true for left backs , apart from Paul Breitner and maybe Andreas Brehme I can't think of any who have significantly made their team a whole lot better (you could argue for Barney's contributions for us in European competition but he didn't make that much difference consistently as opposed to other left backs we've had)

According to SSN Tottenham have had a bid accepted and Bale has been shown around their facilities but has yet to agree with personal terms with them. Arsenal have now entered the race to sign him and he may favour a move their as he is close freinds with Theo Walcott and Ferguson will watch him play on Sunday...
