Kewell three or four weeks away from full fitness.

    Kewell targets Nou Camp

    From correspondents in Liverpool
    January 21, 2007

HARRY Kewell has set his sights on being back in the Liverpool team in time for next month's Champions League trip to Barcelona, after running for the first time since last July's World Cup.

Liverpool travels to the Nou Camp on February 21 for the first leg of a second-round meeting with the defending champion, and Kewell believes he is on track to be on the plane after a string of injuries that threatened to result in a premature end to his career.

"I actually started running on Tuesday for the first time since the World Cup, so that was amazing, just getting to this stage is a major relief and a weight off my mind," said the Australian overnight.

Kewell returned to England in November after undergoing surgery on his left foot and groin in Sydney and, although his rehabilitation is progressing well, he admits being sidelined becomes harder to bear the nearer he gets to a comeback.

"I think the desperation to play gets cranked up a little now that I am back here at Liverpool," he told the club's matchday program.

"I know I am getting closer but I'm so keen to get back into it now that it can't come quickly enough for me. This is the frustrating stage, when it's close enough that you start to get your hopes up.

"It is gutting seeing the boys play and knowing that you can't be part of it - just yet.

"I hope that I'm about three or four weeks away from being fully fit. I'm under the supervision of the medical team here and the surgeons who operated on me, so once they are all happy with the running then I can start on ball work and once that is going well, it is up to the manager when he decides I'm ready to return.

"I've been back in England since the middle of November, and it's getting harder and harder. The lads are great here, they're always asking when I'm going to be ready and how I'm going but you can't really feel part of it unless you're getting your shirt dirty with them at the weekend."

Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

I love kewell when hes fully fit, i think hes a brilliant player, 2nd best left winger in the prem history behind giggs.

Funny how hes always fit for the big games though

Hope he stays fit. I agree that he is our best option on the left.

Kewell is our best LW when fully fit obviously, but I was very encouraged by the Aurelio/Riise combination today. Looked solid defensively for most of the game and combined as a real threat going forward.

I'm not really getting too excited about Kewell's return. Rafa seems to like him, but personally I'd sell him for as much as we could get as soon as he's fit to kick a ball.

He's ridiculously injury prone and his contract is up in 18 months time.

We would get 2m for him. Tops.

It occurred to me that it was the weight on his physique that might be more of a problem
