    How do we compare?

When Rafa arrived here, he left probably the top side in Europe.

The Valencia team that won the UEFA Cup final was:
    Canizares
    Curro Torres,Ayala,Marchena,Carboni
    Rufete,Albelda,Baraja,Vicente
    Angulo,Mista
    Subs:
    Rangel,Pellegrino,Sanchez,Garrido
    Aimar,Xisco,Sissoko.

Based on our current squad, how close or far do you think we are from that team?

Personally I think we still have a lot to do to reach that level; how much of a difference would an on form Vicente make to our squad; or a finisher to play alongside Kuyt.

I think our current team would beat the Liverpool side Rafa took over 9 times out of 10; but it's still only half the job.

Hopefully DIC can make sure Rafa can complete his task.

I don´t think we are far off actually. Torres isn´t a world beater and Carboni was rather old at that time so the defence is probably similar. Not much between the goalies or in attack. The only spot that Valencia team is superior is left mid IMO. If you put Gerrard on the right that is with Momo and Xabi in the middle.

We are not very far off. The difference is Valencia was playing in La Liga and us the Premier League, which makes it tougher for us. Not sure if Valencia would have won titles here though.

They might have - the team played so efficiently and organized. It´s like they had an extra outfield player.

Didn't analyze them at the time they were trained by Rafa. One thing I can recollect is that they were quite unfancied as regards to their style of play. They were known as being very efficient and defensive. That's what the press in Spain used to say anyway.

I´m no Valencia expert either, but I also think that if Rafa had Valencia´s current squad, he would walk all over Barca and Real.

In terms of results not too far off, but in terms of quality attacking, flowing football, a million miles away. His team at Valencia was fantastic to watch.

They certainly played good stuff when they beat us in the Champions League, epecially at Anfield - we couldn't get the ball off them!

I think that in terms of personel we are not really that far off either. Bit hard comparing teams in the Premiership and La Liga and maybe our players are bit thicker and just aren´t getting what Rafa is telling them?

The team that won the second La Liga title scored 71 league goals and had the best defence.

Definitely something in the argument that some of our current players are less tactically aware than those he had in Spain. I think in part it is just more difficult to create the instincts needed in the Premier League as the pace is so much faster and fewer teams attempt to play football rather than just aiming to out muscle us.

i dont think Rafa would be as defensive if he had better personnel, reading his books listening to him speak.....he believes the team attack and defend as 1.
That Valencia team were a ruthless punishing machine.

I have to agree. Valencia for two years were unbelievable. They were brilliant and are one of the best sides I've ever seen.

We're certainly not there yet imo.
