Absolutely spot on. I was born in Liverpool, which my atlas says is in England, but I don't feel English and the majority of the rest of the country hates scousers so why the **** should we care about the national team?

Personally I would prefer Gerrard, Carragher and (for that matter) Rooney, Barton, Nolan and every other eligible scouser to stick two fingers up to McClaren and the FA. Let the ****ers rely on Mancs like the Nevilles and Mockneys like Lampard and Ferdinand and see what a ****ing mess they'd be in...

The only people I've met who hate Scousers are SCUM fans. I haven't met any non-football fans who hate scousers.

You should get out more then Red_Chilli - unless you're not a scouser...

Hate is probably too strong a word. An underlying disdain is probably a more accurate assessment.

Maybe the reason you get so much hostility from non-scousers isn't because you're a scouser but just because you're you.
              .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

Mate, virtually everyone I know hates Scousers. In football terms, a lot of it is due to us winning everything when folk of roughly my age were growing up – so they hate us for ruining their childhoods.

FFS, cockneys slag scousers. Scousers slag cockneys. Welsh slag Bristolians, Bristolians slag welsh (taffy ****s), Brummies slag geordies.

The whole of the uk is like this. Its not just an anti scouse thing IMO.

You live in Manchester though. They built a bloody canal so they wouldn't have to deal with Liverpool, they're just like that there.

But I’m not from here and most people I know are not Mancs. I’m talking in Derbyshire, London…wherever.

Scousers DEFINITELY get a rougher deal than Mancs, Geordies, Brummies or Cockneys IMO.

I don't know that many people who HATE scousers, but plenty of people (rightly or wrongly) feel that a lot of scousers feel hard done by all the time. "Bemused disdain" is probably the correct phrase.

An example would be the reaction to Boris Johnson's quip last year - why not just laugh at it, or did his views actually ring slightly true?

The thief angle still goes on, which is frustrating because I bet there are other cities/towns with much worse crime.

I guess the problem/impasse is circular : people get the wrong idea about scousers, say stupid things, but then the scousers react in exactly the way they'd be expected to if what was said was true

Wherever you go in England, and sometimes abroad, people have a stereotypical image of scousers being thieving, shellsuit wearing scallywags. Indeed the word scouser is now synonymous with being a chav or pikey. Part of this is maybe our own fault but TV programmes like "Boys From the Blackstuff", "Bread", "Brookside" and, worst of all, "The Harry Enfield Show" perpetuate these stereotypes. Virtually every set of away fans at Anfield sing "Sign On" or "You've Nicked Our Stereo" type songs. I've even seen those sorts of comments on this website from so-called Liverpool fans...

But, hey, so what. I honestly don't give a **** what the rest of England thinks because I don't feel English at all despite my birth certificate saying "Liverpool, England" on it. I feel more empathy with places like Glasgow, Cardiff or Dublin than Guildford, Colchester or Doncaster.

However, my original point (which seems to have been overlooked by everybody apart from Shaggy) was that all genuine Liverpool fans will agree with Rick Parry and not give a **** about the English national team. If you can say, hand on heart, that you'd rather see England win the World Cup or European Championships than see Liverpool win the Premiership or Champions League then I suggest you might be supporting the wrong club...

You were doing alright until the last paragraph

Just because I don't feel like you do about England (what the hell does that even mean? The English government? Thatcher?), doesn't make me any less of a Liverpool fan.

As for 'what I'd rather see happen' :

                                If you phrase it

"What would you prefer to see in your life, England to win the World Cup, but at the expense of Liverpool not once winning the premiership"

then I'd go for Liverpool winning the premiership every time.

                                However, if it's phrased

"If in 2010 I had to choose between the two, as a one-off decision", then I'd go for England winning the World Cup - because I'd expect/know Liverpool can win the premiership again.

It might seem like divided loyalties, but it's really a case of choosing one pretty unlikely event (England winning the World Cup in my lifetime) vs a very likely event (Liverpool winning the Premiership many times in my life)

(These are all stupid hypothetical questions - we don't want to get into this sort of logic - fact is it's possible to enjoy both, and I distance the two)
