Riise and Finnan should be first to go.
They offer nothing going forward, Finnan (solid as he is defending) is so poor going forward it drives me up the wall, his crosses float through the air...which is the reason Crouch never gets power onto headers. To get power you need the ball to be travelling with pace. Finnan just cant do this, yet he is the main supplier of balls into the box. We have to be back in for Alves...or at least try. Richards would also be high on my wishlist.
Riise is shocking really, he can actually play the ball quite well, and can dribble reasonably well...but why oh why does he resort to the "hoof" so much? I also dont need to go on about his positioning do i
one word describes that TERRIBLE. Id love for us to sign Bale now, he does look very good....and he can only get better.
Aurelio has actually played pretty well for us recently, that one game where Riise was played at left midfield, they both looked very good. It allowed Riise the opportunity to run onto balls, instead of getting them behind the play...and hoofing it forward. We looked solid on the left side like this.
Pennant will probably get another season id guess, but its clear he isnt good enough....we need more, and he just cant do it week in, week out. Ribery should be first name on the list to replace him IMO.
LW looks to be one of our better positional battles. We have the option to play Kewell (when fit), Gonzalez, Riise and Garcia (Leto will also be added to the equation)...all play well...but none are outstanding. I actually think Gonzalez has a bit about him...he has that pace and willingness to try things. I'd like to see him play more, he hasn't got a string of games to prove himself yet.
I actually like our strikers...except for Fowler. He just doesnt have the ability to run games out anymore. We should be giving a young lad a chance instead of God. Linfield looks to have a scorers knack..he shoud be given an opportunity. He will be a good backup, but if we want to win the title, we have to get better than Finnan. He offers nothing in an attacking sense. Fullbacks need to be good going forward with the ball. He offers us alot on the field. People will probably be quick to point out that he doesnt score goals or assist goals, and he has lost his pace...but its his link up play thats were his value is. He links with Gerrard so well, and i can see him linking up with Kuyt equally as well. He retains the ball well, and moves it on to players in good positions. Often our players play the ball to the first person they see. He looks futher up the pitch, and starts attacking moves by doing this.
He also draws players away from the middle, like him or not, he still is one of the top names in football circles. he gets plenty of support on the right mate. He just doesnt have the attacking ability. Pennat is always out there waiting for a pass, but it often doesnt come until there are 3 players around the ball. To attack down the wings you need to move the ball FAST. Ah i wont hear a wrong word said about him. I thinks he's been fantastic for us since he's arrive and consistent player that is as safe as a house. I think his attacking abilities have come on alot. i know he's not the fastest but, he has one of the best crosses in the league, any he's the most reliable when we need him the most...
