Rafa has no idea when Kewell will be fit again.

Liverpool boss has no idea over Kewell return
    tribalfooball.com - February 13, 2007

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez admits he doesn't know when or if Harry Kewell will be available to him this season.

Aussie winger Kewell, 28, has yet to play this season, after previously overcoming two nightmare years battling groin problems.

But Liverpool boss Benitez has revealed he is still in the dark as to exactly when Kewell will be fit.

He admitted: "Harry is progressing but with his situation, we can't say whether it's one week or two weeks or whatever. We look at it day by day.

"We tried to support Harry when he had problems last season. He was playing really well but after the World Cup he had another problem."

Kewell has another year on his contract after this season and has been attracting interest from Spurs.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

Seems Rafa has lost patience with him.

If we get to the CL final, i rekon there's a chance he might be fit. Well for 20 mins at least.

Benitez in the dark over Kewell comeback

                Feb 14 2007

by Ian Doyle, Liverpool Daily Post

RAFAEL BENITEZ admits he has no idea when injury-jinxed Harry Kewell will again play for Liverpool.

The Australian has not kicked a ball in anger for the Anfield side since hobbling off shortly after half-time during the FA Cup final victory over West Ham United last May.

Kewell had targeted the Champions League first knockout round clash with Barcelona at the Nou Camp next Wednesday for a comeback.

But Benitez has revealed the forward’s lengthy rehabilitation has made it impossible to earmark a date for his return.

“Harry is progressing, but with his situation we can’t say whether it’s one week or two weeks or whatever,” said the Liverpool manager. “We need to look at it day by day.

“I could say he could be back for two weeks, but we have to really wait and see.

“We tried to support Harry when he had some problems last season. He was playing really well, but after the World Cup he had another problem.”

Kewell’s last senior appearance came in Australia’s final World Cup group game against Croatia in June last year.

The 28-year-old netted the late equaliser to send his country into a second round clash with Italy, but missed the 1-0 defeat to the eventual winners through injury.

Kewell has since undergone a series of operations in Sydney to save his career, having surgery on both feet and also his groin before returning to England in November to continue his rehabilitation.

Kewell’s time at Anfield has been plagued by injury and he has been available for less than half of the games since Benitez assumed control at Anfield in 2004.

It led to previous run-ins with Australian authorities over the treatment of the player, but Benitez added: “The relationship with the Australia Federation now is good. The physios are working together with our own physios on Harry, but now we just need time.

“We have to wait for Harry to be close to being fit before we talk to him and give him support on the mental side of playing again.”

The former Leeds United man’s current Anfield contract expires at the end of next season and Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a summer move for the winger.

I think he'll be off in the summer. There was an interesting comment made in an interview about Hicks, where someone who has had dealings with him was saying that he doesn't mind paying the money, but if the player doesn't deliver (on the pitch and by extension then towards football and financial success) then he will get rid.

I immediately thought of Kewell and his disproportionate wages, and I think Rafa will be more than willing to let him go.

Put that along with the more considerable resources that Rafa has, patience has to be wearing thin, be it Kewell's own fault or not.
Bill shankly to Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee:
'Take that poof bandage off, and what do you mean YOUR knee, it's LIVERPOOL'S knee !'

"Sorry, boss, I should have kept my legs together," said Lawrence. "No, Tommy, your mother should have kept her legs together!," replied Shankly.

                    * After Tommy Lawrence had let in a fluke goal between his legs

I totally agree. And, for me, anything that Rafa has to say between now and the end of the season about how good Kewell was playing has to be taken with a huge pinch of salt - after all he diplomatically said that if Cisse had been at Valencia they would win the league every year, before getting shot of him pretty much asap.

                        Did he really say that?

It rings a bell that but I think he said that before he'd started pre-season training in July 2004 i.e. before he found out Cisse had no football brain.

Rafa must have watched him extensively though. after all, we swiped him from under the nose of Benitez when he was at valencia, who was very keen to sign him. Hang on, it was a similar case with diouf wasn't it?
