I thought I'd use my 100th post to highlight this from a Blue on VitalEverton. Plus it's Valentine's night and I sadly have nothing better to do.
Merseyside - Rivalry or Hate-Red?
We here at EvertonVital realise the enormous differences between us and our neighbours from hell across the park.Up until i'd say the mid 90's (when also the feeling of scouse cohesion fell apart) these differences were respected. There was always intense dislike AT THE MATCH but we'd all have a drink afterwards,Evertonians and Liverpudlians alike, with no bitterness.
I feel now however that a VERY SMALL - and i will repeat this - VERY SMALL section of Our support (Everton`s)is tarnishing our clubs name. They are making us appear something the we are not, especially to our kopite rivals, that we are bitter and twisted.......oh and even worse have nothing else to sing about, and worse than that we've forgot our roots - what we stand for (that is singing about our history -standing for greatness) and where we come from (us and Kopites are all scousers at the end of the day).
Don't get me wrong, I despise the kopites as much as the next fan, but that doesn't make me feel the need to the perils of allowing Liverpudlians to pooh-poo our feeble and sick attempts to get one over on them, my god they must be forgiven now for thinking that we haven't won anything we sing about a certain player of theirs and his misdemeanours with his girlfriend/baby so much........we make ourselves appear that we have gone so long without winning a thing that we have to rely on distasteful insults vacating the mouths of scallywags to appear better than our rivals. May I ask - why our we sometimes POSSIBLY so self obsessed with the kopites? Why don't we sing about our own history far more?
This lack of scouse identity (a general feeling of sticking together) and increasing abhorrence of Liverpool more than ever, combined with new social forces e.g. from the Wirral and beyond supporting Everton has resulted in our support forgetting what we and Liverpool stand for, forgetting that their is at least a few issues at least we should come together on, or at least declare our displeasure at.
An example of such a thing is the increasing amount of Evertonians, despite possibly knowing victims/wounded of the infamous Hillsborough disaster,go out and buy 'The Sun'........many in ignorance of the despicable lies and rhetoric the paper printed on the event.Worse they have let this paper influence and fuel further their hatred of the kopites,i've heard some-especially the younger generation, our supports future, maintain that despite the Sun's anti-scouse agenda, the comments that Liverpool fans pick pocketed the dead 'are accurate`. Such views our vehemently opposed by people like me whose Dad and uncle where at Hillsborough on that terrible day and actually helped the injured/dying and not profited from them by stechering them off the pitch.
I'm probably reminiscing in nostalgia that is now never more, occasions like the harmony of the 1989 FA Cup Final will probably never occur again.I just hope this dangerous minority of younger fans who are making us look idiots by swinging their shirts about, singing about DNA tests either die down (hopefully) or are made to pipe down.
oh and lastly, for all those fans low enough to have taunted Liverpool fans at Anfield with 'Hillsborough gestures`, please get your facts right and CLICK HERE AND READ THIS
Finally, please do not take this article as me suggesting we cut up our rivalry all together with Liverpool and be one big happy family, run across Stanley park and embrace our foes giving them a big sloppy kiss in the process, far from it-our rivalry is what contributes to the excitement of the great institution of the Merseyside Derby.
