Far be it for me to suggest that they'll fail, but I somehow get the feeling that you'll quiten down a little on this front as the season gets underway. I think they'll be solid performers but I'm afraid I don't share your optimism just yet.
I think it's painfully obvious that we still need another striker. Without that sorted, I remain unconvinced about how well the team can function. As nice as it would be, we can't just rely on Robbie to roll back the years.
"I never think of the future. It comes soon enough."
I thought Pennant was very impressive tonight. I've not historically been a big fan of his, but all through pre season he has impressed me, and particularly so tonight.
I have my doubts about Bellamy so we'll see. Important goal though. And certainly puts the work in.
I have to say, the more I see Pennant in a red shirt, the less bothered I am about the fee we paid for him. I reckon he could end up being a bargain.
Pennant has always been an excellent player but his head went when he was continually overlooked at Arsenal then he suffered the ultimate indignity of being loaned out to Leeds and Birmingham. No wonder he hit the bottle!
As we all know he provided more crosses by a country mile than any other player in the Premiership last year but unfortunately for him Emile Heskey was on the end of them so he got very few assists and, of course, Birmingham were (thankfully) relegated.
Surrounded by better players, trained by excellent coaches like Rafa, Pako and Alex Miller and with the right man management and encouragement he will develop into one of the best wide midfielders / wingers in the Premiership. With Wright-Phillips continuing to get splinters in his bum this season and defenders sussing Lennon out it would not surprise me if Pennant was called up by England for the Euro Qualifiers.
There is a light that never goes out. RIP Alan "Mally" Johnston and the 96. YNWA.
