    Benitez hints at striker move

Rafael Benitez praised match-winner Mark Gonzalez after tonight’s Champions League qualifying victory over Maccabi Haifa – then revealed he is close to signing a new striker.

Chilean winger Gonzalez scored the winner within moments of coming on for his debut in the 2-1 third qualifying round first-leg win at Anfield

Liverpool had been forced to battle back from a goal down after Gustavo Boccoli struck with Craig Bellamy – also on his debut – equalising soon after.

But the glaring need for more forward options was obvious and speculation continues that Liverpool are closer to signing £10m-rated Holland international Dirk Kuyt.

Yet even though Benitez now has an extra £2m from selling Djimi Traore to Charlton, he remained cagey.

He said: “We have two or three names, Kuyt is one. We are still working hard but maybe a little closer.”

Gonzalez’s goal saved Liverpool from a potentially tricky second leg at a neutral venue.

It seems the choice is now between Cyprus or Kiev but Liverpool’s group stage hopes are still on knife edge wherever the game is played.

Benitez said: “We knew Mark was capable of goals, he has shown that in La Liga. It was not a gamble to take off Steven Gerrard, we have players from the World Cup who are 15 days behind the rest in their training.

Would most people be happy if we signed Kuyt for 10million????

Iv seen him play 5 or 6 times and it seems a bit to much. I would rather have someone more skillfull playing up front rather than hard working,

Rafa has said there are other targets so i do wonder who they are.

The thing about Kuyt, in my opinion, is that he is more of a target man (like Crouchy) than a pacey and skillful striker people have been screaming out for.

If anything, Kuyt will provide back-up / alternative to our own Peter Crouch. What I find baffling is that people who have been arguing that Crouch stifles our attacking play and stops the team from playing football on the ground thinks Kuyt will help us kick our attacking play a notch or two - presumably by contributing to a more quick, fluid and counter-attacking play. From what I have seen, I just can't see how Kuyt may contribute in that regard....

I disagree. We have players who are skilful, who can play up front in the form of Bellamy, Pongolle and Garcia. What we need is a bruiser, who can hold up play, head the ball properly and be on the end of the crosses from out wingers. IF Kuyt is in the Shearer mold, then he is exactly the sort of player needed.
I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it.

Just to ask those who have watched him play a lot.....is Kuyt a good header of the ball? is he fox in the box type of striker or what? we could do with 1 ..or 2 strikers of that sort.

Last night we were screaming for a good/strong striker who can HEAD the ball. The quality of crosses coming from both sides were superb, obviously Bellamy isn't going to challenge for all of them and unfortunatly Crouch is pretty lame at attacking crosses. I haven't seen enough of Kuyt to say yes/no but from what I've heard and read about him he seems the only available option who can do that job. If not Kuyt, then who? I can't think of any strikers available who are good enough for Liverpool without breaking the bank.

Koller.......is he still playing? went to a restaurant in Prague that had pictures of Czech footballers that had eaten there, Nedved, baros and then a classic of Jan Koller looking really gormless holding a fork with the biggest piece of meat I've seen attached to it, to add to our amusement we suddenly realised that one of mates must be Jan Koller's love child because he is as an absolute spitting image of him (sorry for the random of topic bit)
