Haha is that a ****ing joke or what? 9-0-1 was the formation Everton used at our place. They scored NO GOALS and conceded NO GOALS. Clearly that wasn't a ****ing 9-0-1 tonight. We went 4-4-2 in the Nou Camp, a brave selection, and we ****ing won. Stick that up your ****ing right-on arses, you Guardian ****s!! :bird:Originally posted by tsb View PostHa, just looked at the Guardian line up...

Rafa Benitez was delighted with his players' response to a controversial week as they secured only the second victory by an English team at Camp Nou.
Goals from Craig Bellamy and John Arne Riise - reportedly the chief protagonists in the club's ill-fated training camp in Portgual - saw The Reds claim a superb 2-1 victory over Barcelona in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League last 16 tie.
Liverpool have been under intense scrutiny ever since weekend reports of an alcohol-fuelled bust-up, but Benitez's men produced a display full of fight in all the right places and the Spaniard was delighted with their efforts.
"I said before in the press conference that the atmosphere between the players was really good and you could see today them all working very hard for the team, for the club and for the supporters," Benitez told Sky Sports.
"For me I am really pleased with Bellamy and John scoring these goals and also pleased for the team too.
"The players have done a very good job, we were training and working very hard to prepare for this game and to play Barcelona is not easy.
"I think that the team was very good at playing counter-attack."
Deco had put Barcelona ahead early on in Catalunya, but Bellamy's header just before half-time gave The Reds hope as his effort managed to sneak over the line after some poor goalkeeping from Victor Valdes.
Benitez admitted that lady luck shined on his team in that instance, but the Spaniard insisted his side fully deserved the one-goal advantage they will seek to protect at Anfield in two weeks.
"We started well but after we conceded a goal - we made a mistake that was clear - we did not play well for the last part of the first half," Benitez added.
"The second half we had better ideas, good movement and we played good counter-attack and then the team were better.
"Sometimes you have luck [for the first goal], and we had luck, but afterwards I felt we deserved the final score."
Barca still represent a clear danger despite Liverpool's advantage, and Benitez was careful not to count his chickens ahead of the second leg.
"At the end of the day we need to play another game, I don't want to say that everything is done, we need to be careful and think about the next game also."

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

Rafa 'misses' Bellamy gesture
From correspondents in Barcelona
February 22, 2007
LIVERPOOL manager Rafa Benitez claimed he did not see Craig Bellamy's controversial celebration after the fiery Wales striker equalised in a memorable 2-1 Champions League win over Barcelona today (AEDT).
Bellamy and fellow Liverpool goalscorer John Arne Riise, who got the winner after 74 minutes, were involved in a training camp fracas in Portugal last week which had cast a shadow over the 2005 European champion's preparations for today's last 16, first-leg.
Bellamy followed up his 42nd minute goal by imitating a golf swing, a deliberately ironic and questionable gesture in light of the fact that he apparently assaulted Riise with a golf club.
"I didn't see the celebration, I thought the keeper (Barcelona's Victor Valdes) was catching the ball and I turned around," said Benitez.
"It was at the end of the first half and I was thinking about the second half.
"But the training camp in Portugal was very helpful. The commitment of the players both before and after the problem was fantastic. I'm just really pleased for the team," added Benitez.
Nevertheless, the former Real Madrid reserve seemed more bemused than delighted that his team had just inflicted Barcelona's first home loss this season, and its first in the Champions League since April 2003.
"The game didn't really go to plan. I wasn't planing on conceding a goal first and we were looking at trying to score on the counter-attack.
"Barcelona did cause us problems, especially when they switched Lionel Messi to the other half of the field," said Benitez in the wake of the second half arrival of Barca's Fance right winger, Ludovic Giuly.
Expressing his usual caution, Benitez carefully didn't say that Liverpool was going to progress easily to this year's quarter-finals when the two sides meet again at Anfield on March 6.
"What I will say is that I can see Barcelona winning the Spanish League title. This job is not done."
Benitez is now unbeaten in three visits to the Nou Camp as a senior team coach, his first two coming when he was at the helm of Spain Primera Liga side Valencia.
"Valencia was in the league though and this is another competition. This is a much more important victory," added Benitez, who also paid tribute to the effect that the noisy but good-natured 5000 Liverpool fans had on his men.
"We could hear them throughout the game, they were a big lift to the team,"

That line-up is given in their minute-by-minute report, i.e as it happens. So the team was announced and someone made a joke suggesting that we might defend for 90 minutes.Originally posted by tsb View PostHa, just looked at the Guardian line up...

He then said:
Simon Bishop is obviously a very amusing chap, making much the same joke as was already made.Actually... I'm not quite sure how Liverpool will line up here, seeing as both Arbeloa and Finnan are right backs. I'm guessing 4-2-3-1 with Finnan left back, Gerrard as a right midfielder/winger, and Kuyt as a lone striker. "I'm shocked at your predicted Liverpool formation," says Simon Bishop. "Do you really think they will go for an attacking formation and play one up front?"
Anyway, let's not get too touchy, seeing everything as a conspiracy, eh?
Good performance, great result..
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.
May the Lord bless this post.
