    'Praise for Mascherano' thread

So, Mascherano played his first game for Liverpool today. What are your thoughts on his performance?

I personally think that he was great. He isn't at the same level as Alonso yet (I've said this because everyone talk about that he's a back-up to Xabi), but it's looking promising! I think Rafa did it again!

Javier's tackles were okay, he ran a lot, passed the ball with comfort... All in all a brilliant performance by the man (okay, I know he played against Sheffield United, but still...).

    Well done lad!

It will be difficult for Rafa to drop one of Alonso, Mascherano or Sissoko. Gerrard will probably from now on play where he should play, as an attacking midfielder.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

He did really well in the second half and as someone has already said on another thread, he really allowed Gerrard to play his most marauding game.

He looks to be a very good addition to the squad.

Looks shaky in the first half, passing way off. But improved tremendously in the 2nd half and showed why he won 20 caps in the Argentinian squad.

His spacial awareness looked a bit suspect in the first half, which is fair enough as he hasn't played for so long.

But as the game went on he looked to gain in confidence and awareness and showed some glimses of what we can expect when he is up to speed.

Yeah it was a good performance , and as already mentioned, he improved as the game went on.
He looked confident, a good sign, and was happy to take the ball forward later in the game.
A solid start, let' hope he can build on it during the rest of this season

I did write a considered response about how he doesn't seem to be a replacement for any of our midfielders, as he seems different again, in the didi mould, and how he was solid if unspectacular today, with some good tenacity, and a couple of moments of rustiness....

But then the server seemed to hang....

                    suspect he will only improve

                    As AA says, massive potential.

In my opinion, Mascherano in the second half showed why I think Sissoko needs to be second choice. I love Sissoko's flair and gusto back there, but watching Mascherano's control and calm play (while still disrupting play for the other side) sold me 100%. Sissoko in my opinion gives far too many balls away after he wins them, makes too many undisciplined tackles and somehow, when he plays, Xabi and Stevie don't seem to link up as well. Mascherano/ Gerrard/ Kuyt were linking up beautifully today. I'm not trying to slag off Sissoko on Mascherano's one match against SU, because I think Momo is growing as a player and I love his energy and physical play. But I felt much more secure about the shape of the team and the quality of link-up play and distribution with Mascherano in there today. How much of that was Sheffield, time will tell. However, a few more games like that and he's first choice for me.

That's why Rafa uses squad-rotation system He won't replace anybody in long term, just rotate all the time. Which is great, tbh. I still think Sissoko shouldn't be second choice, because he and Mascherano are different. But Rafa has "many possibilities™" now. I'd choose Momo to break oppositions' midfield and in tougher, physical games and Mascherano in other...

I think that he's showed enough today to prove that Rafa was right to sign him, he does offer something different to our current midfielders and i think that once he's gained a bit more match fitness we'll start to see the best of him
We managed to rectify it, though, because it now says, "Cook" where it once said "Cock", and "Pass" where it once said "Piss", so it’s slightly less rude.

Whilst its too early to make any real decision on Mascherano, he did ok today. He got better as the game went on and showed some neat touches.

theres no doubting his ability, you don't play 22 times for argentina at 22 years old, unless you are a very special player. will he adapt to English football, well there's no reason why he shouldn't. If he does then we'll have one hell of a good player on our hands.
