Post-Match Wash Up - Sheff Utd

We haven't got one, despite banging in 4 goals, we should be singing from the rooftops.

However, I hope I don't see that type of pen being given as becoming a "norm", the first one by SG I'm talking about, eek, sold by SG & bought by the defender, a soft gimme if I ever saw one, embarassing at best.

It just goes to show how Stevie has matured over the last few seasons to be able to play to the ref like that. When he first burst onto the scene he would hack at anyone and give many set pieces away himself. But here he was today playing the game to the rules and getting the just deserved's.

As a defender you can't "hug" someone like that and pull them down. yes, it did look soft but still a peno in any referee's tech manual.

I know we don't wanna go down the diving for free kicks avenue, but if penalties are being given out for fun these days, lets jump on that band wagon. it's what turned the game according to Warnock!

So you agree with Warnock then?

It must've been the most boring 4-0 ever.

For what it's worth, here are my ratings:

Dudek - remarkably assured given his last two performances. 7

Finnan - Never tested, solid if unspectacular. 7

Carragher - He's back to his best and this was another assured performance. 7

Hyypia - Some sloppy passing and too many long balls, again, but a goal and defensively sound. 7

Riise - Slowly but surely finding a modicum of form, although he couldnt go much lower. 6

Pennant - Impressed. Showed courage on the ball, no little skill, and tremendous desire throughout. He's starting to look a player. 8

Mascherano - Slow start, but grew and grew and grew throughout. Ended the game in imperious form. Snaffled almost every second ball, hard and accurate tackling, positionally very astute and decent distribution. I couldn't have been much more impressed. 8

Gerrard - A constant attacking threat and back to somewhere near his driving, forceful best. 8

Gonzalez - Anonymous. Never once had a run at the full-back and contributed nothing. 5

            Crouch - n/a

Fowler - Looked leaner, fitter and sharper to me than he has done for a while, although some sloppiness crept into his game later on. Two great pens. 7

            Subs:

Kuyt - The obligatory irrepressible work rate, an effervescent presence but again seemed to lack that little bit of class. Decent link up play, especially with Pennant. 7

Alonso - An unremarkable 15 minute cameo, although I did get the impression he felt at ease alongside Mascherano. 6

            Agger - n/a
