Fans not aware of the specifics would have seen the CL holders replace the 4th place team in the competition and assumed that was the rule. In any case, it would be logical to expect that the holders would defend the trophy.

I think every reasonable person was astounded when the FA decided to reward 4th place as opposed to the holders - no other FA in Europe would have made the same decision.
It was completely inequitable, especially as the precedent had been set by the Spanish FA. That case showed that 4th place was no guarantee of a place in the CL, so any team going for a CL spot should have been aware that to be certain of it they would have to be go for a top 3 place - if you're not good enough to make the top 3 and a team below you wins the CL that's too bad.

UEFA were pretty spineless throughout as well. They let themselves get manipulated by the FA. They should have pressured the FA to give us the CL spot, and threatened not to accept Everton as a nominition, instead of allowing themselves to get persuaded to give England 5 places, which quite frankly was a nonsense.

UEFA did nothing wrong that year in my opinion. They acted entirely correctly and must have been dismayed that the english FA were SO STUPID that they gave a place to Everton.
UEFA made the mistake of not having a rule in place from the outset that the holders would always defend their trophy regardless of any FA decisions.

I agree - their mistake was giving the discretion to the FAs and not having a set rule of the allowing the holders automatic entry instead of the 4th place club.

But they shouldn't have allowed themselves to be manipulated into giving England 5 places. If I was Real Zaragoza who missed out in 2000 I would be mighty pissed - they were the real losers of Everton's constant whinging and moaning to be allowed in.

The FA played a game of brinkmanship, gambling our CL place in the hope UEFA would give England 5 places - they won but it backfired with Everton getting eliminated in the preliminaries. There's no way UEFA should have been allowed to be bullied by the FA - if there was a way UEFA could change their rules to allow Liverpool in, there must equally have been a way to change them to exclude Everton, which would have been the most equitable outcome.

lol, I've got a few manc friends, a couple liverpool fans, Tottenham and Arsenal. Thankfully no ******* chelsea supporters, though since we grew up watching the Goodies, Chelsea supporter is considered an insult.

Thanks heaps for the info, you all rock

Sadly I know more UTD fans then liverpool fans for some wretched reason. I think the most fun was the Arsenal fan. Even when things went good or bad for either of our teams he would turn it into a huge joke. My manc friends seem to get all emotional and argue over anything.

Current example, I just showed my UTD friend the FA article. He dismissed it saying obviously it wasnt approved so it was pulled, and he didnt recognize the writer of the article. I simply said he wanted proof that the article existed, why it was pulled is not my problem. Still dismissed it.

The names of players who were in 3 teams in a season he also tossed excuses around for. Stead, he's obviously english and doesnt go by FIFA rules. Aliadere, obviously had different circumstances, possibly work permit reladed etcetc. I said the only circumstances that are different is he's not a Liverpool player, the team everyone seems to think get the golden handshake and rules changed just for them, despite other team having gone down the same road in the past.

I tell you its just frustrating. I just said theres your proof, take it how you wish I dont have the energy to argue with you. Bloody mancs. Everything in the world is against them and in favour of Liverpool.

I've found most of my UTD friends think they're far mroe intelligent then half the world and backhand anything thats even got a remote chance of dismissing. Its beyond frustrating. They are definately the single most worst fans to talk to about football sometimes. Ths bias that comes out of them in the form of supposed logic kills me.

Bill shankly to Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee:
'Take that poof bandage off, and what do you mean YOUR knee, it's LIVERPOOL'S knee !'

"Sorry, boss, I should have kept my legs together," said Lawrence. "No, Tommy, your mother should have kept her legs together!," replied Shankly.
