Sir Alex Ferguson is surprised Martin Atkinson has replaced Graham Poll as referee for Manchester United's trip to Liverpool.
Poll was originally scheduled to officiate Saturday's game at Anfield, live on Sky Sports 1, but picked up an injury in midweek.
The experienced official was injured during Blackburn Rovers' FA Cup replay with Arsenal and his booking has been taken by Atkinson.
But the decision to appoint Atkinson as the referee for the clash between the arch-rivals has taken United boss Ferguson by surprise.
"I think Graham Poll is the most experienced referee," said Ferguson on Sky Sports News.
"So we have gone from the most experienced, to the least experienced referee and that's a surprise.
"Other than that we have to accept it and get on with it - there's nothing we can do about it, but just play the game."
Ferguson is aware officials have been in the spotlight in recent weeks, but praised Howard Webb's handling of last week's stormy Carling Cup final between Arsenal and Chelsea.
He added: "I think that refs are under the spotlight. There's been a lot of controversy over the last few weeks.
"The cup final last week, you couldn't blame the referee for that. We've got to look at ourselves in that respect and it was unacceptable what happened in the final.
"The referee is having to try and control that, which is unfortunate for him and I think he did it well.
"We had him on Tuesday and I think, once again, we see an emerging ref. I think it's important that if Graham Poll and Alan Wiley - these experienced referees obviously at the peak of their games - it's important for the game itself that we have referees of potential to come through.
"We've seen Howard Webb has got the potential, we experienced it on Tuesday. It was not an easy game, it was a feisty FA Cup tie and I think he did it well."

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.
