if he proves his fitness before the end of the season would a proven premier league player for 8m be so bad for 3rd choice striker?

In hindsight it was an excellent decision.

Of course at the time it was perceived as a disaster for the club.

I couldn't blame him for leaving for Real at the time. But what I'll never understand is why he didn't stay more than one year. Having made the choice to move country surely he had to make a proper go of it. Instead he fell for an empty threat by Sven about his beloved England place, and joined a second rate club. This was all his own fault. The 2 major injuries in 2 years weren't.

Put it this way for £8m what would we be getting? A player coming of 2 major injuries in 2 years, who of course has barely played any football. Will he be the same player again? And then there's his hunger to get back to his pre injury levels, now a rich man is he still motivated?

In short too many question marks. And seeing as we hopefully aren't penny pinching when it comes to transfers now, we can do better.

I dont think anyone blamed him for going to Real. It was the manner in which he did it, leaving us no time to get a replacement, that p1ssed everyone off.

          Not really.

It was the part where he said he was going to sign a new deal a few months before he left.

Players come and go, fact of life. But he lied to us and the club. Everyone would've respected him if he just stated he wanted to leave.

I think Owen is FINISHED as a player, Sadly.
No player can come back the same from them knee injuries. Fowler is a big example. He was never the same after that knee injury he sustained against the blue****e at Anfield.
Owen is a top player but I honestly do not think Rafas plans for the future formation & style wise will fit Owen. Besides we have Bellamy.

see i'd back a fully fit owen to outscore bellamy every time but that is the crucial (cruciate?) bit

there are players such as keane, van nistelrooy and shearer who have recovered fully from serious knee injuries but they don't have slightly dodgy hamstrings and slight frames to go with it.

owen will score between 10-15 goals next season imo as a first choice player at the barcodes and we should be looking for more- this whole thread was a little tongue in cheek. as if owen would go anywhere to be 3rd choice when he has his england career to think of

If he plays a full season, which he probably won't.

£8m is too much of a gamble at this stage. After an injury-free year of football and goals under his belt he might be worth a punt. Right now I wouldn't bid more than £4m for him.

Like RS says, just too many doubts over his fitness. And I think under Rafa, there would be too many doubts over his role in the team for his liking

Remembering the way he burst on to the scene and his great scoring record, and all the potential, it's a shame things have ended up the way they did. But he made his bed.
