    Paisley -v- Ferguson

While the debate goes on about whether 'Sir' Bob should be Sir Bob, here is a comparison between the two managers up to the date Ferguson was knighted.

Ferguson, as much as I detest him, I believe is one of the greatest managers who has ever been.

I think Paisley and Shanks are better.

Shanks for taking us from nowhere and turning us into a great team.

Paisley for taking that great team and turning them into one of the greatest teams of all time.

    Sir Bob - Liverpool 1974-1983

    · League Championships (6): 1975-76, 1976-77, 1978-79, 1979-80, 1981-82, 1982-83.
    · European Cups (3): 1977, 1978, 1981.
    · League Cups (3): 1980-81, 1981-82, 1982-83.
    · UEFA Cup (1): 1975-76.
    · European Super Cup (1): 1976-77.
    · Charity Shields (5): 1974, 1976, 1977 (shared), 1979, 1980, 1982.

    9 seasons – 19 trophies

    Sir Alex
    Aberdeen 1978–1986
    · Scottish League: (3) 1979/80, 1983/84, 1984/85
    · Scottish Cup: (4) 1981/82, 1982/83, 1983/84, 1985/86
    · Scottish League Cup: (1) 1985/86
    · European Cup Winners Cup: (1) 1982/83
    · UEFA Supercup: (1) 1983/84

    8 seasons – 10 trophies

    Manchester United 1986-1999
    · FA Premiership: (5) 1992/93, 1993/94, 1995/96, 1996/97, 1998/99
    · FA Cup: (4) 1989/90, 1993/94, 1995/96, 1998/9
    · League Cup: (1) 1991/92
    · FA Charity/Community Shield: (4) 1993, 1994, 1996, 1997
    · UEFA Champions League: (1) 1998/1999
    · European Cup Winners Cup: (1) 1990/91
    · Intercontinental Cup: (1) 1999 (aka Toyota Cup since 1980)
    · UEFA Supercup: (1) 1991/92

I think we on here may be more than a little biased. We're all going to think Paisley's record is superior, except for Speedy who of course is biased in the other direction.

Personally I'd only count proper trophies. Charity Shields and Supercups are just TV (un)spectaculars (no matter what the great Rafa may say).

    So it's:

    Paisley - 13 in 9 = 1.44 per season
    Ferguson at Aberdeen - 9 in 8 = 1.13 per season
    Ferguson at Man Utd - 12 in 13 = 0.92 per season

Not that it really resolves the argument in any significant way.
    .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

This is where it all falls down for Sour Alex. He's been at OT for 20 years and has qualified practically every year but won it only once.

"Sir" Bob won it when you had to be league winners or holders

I´m fairly certain you can add about three league wins there for Ferguson, giving him 8...am I wrong?
        * The above is posted in my opinion. Feel free to disagree.

Haven't you missed off the last 8 seasons?

                      Agree.

I'd have him and Sir Bob A)1 and A)2.

What he did with Forest is similar to what Shanks did with us back in the 60's, only he retired and Bob finished the job off.

What counts against Demento is his solitary European Cup win. Despite dominating the 90's domestically, and being in charge for 20 years he only has one. And to be honest I reckon the only reason he's chosen to stay on is to try and get another one. I think it gets to him that he's gotten no closer to our haul. Forever in our shadow, and he knows it.
