Not really a knee-jerk reaction, but...

...can anyone remember having such a disapointing season, in terms of expectation?

I mean, every year since I've been a footy fan & supported LFC, I've always said 'This will be the season we win the League', even though deep down realistically I've known top two, three or four would be where we end up.

But after May 05, and our amazing form last year, I honestly and genuinely believed we'd do it this year, or at least take it to the wire. Know what I mean?

Hopefully now we can go on to win the Champions League - fingers crossed!

In answer to your question - yes. 2002-2003 was suposed to be the year Ged was going to bring the title home, yet we went on some ridiculous run of 11 odd league matches without winning. That was worse than this.

This season has been hugely disappointing though and it is clear we'll need some serious reinforcements in the summer if we expect to be up there next year.

PS I pray we win the CL as well, but it won't happen.

Mmm, I forgot about that actually. I just hope now that Arsenal have a bit of a sticky patch so we can stay 3rd

The summer when we signed Kewell.

Unbelievable to think about it now but I honestly thought he was the missing link that Ged had promised, and that we had finally turned the 347th corner of his reign.

Then he played Heskey on the right with Cheyrou up front, again.

cant agree im afraid mate, yesterday was gutting but houlliers time in charge was deppressing the football was bad in the later years, his signings were generally crap and his team selections made me want to fight someone. Benitez is a far better manager and I cant help but remain optimistic. Realistically, I dont think there is a better man around to do the job and i still think that apart from the dodgy start and a couple of freak results against arsenal - weve showed good form and played half decent football - we will play champions league football - not to mention having a good chance of knocking out barcelona this week - we have investment secured and i keep saying it - we are so close .....

Good post. But Beni seems to have Europe figured out, just is taking a lot longer to sort out the domestic stuff. I'd like Liverpool to play with a style that suits the PL, and have a different one for Europe, as the same approach doesn't seem to be working.
                Substance > Style

I agree with what other people have said. The last 18 months of Houllier's reign were a nightmare.

Personally, I can't say that I was expecting that much from Houllier in the last throws of his reign (last two years, maybe?).

Despite not really believing that Benitez can win us the PL I did think this year we would be very close. I figured Chelsea would be pre-occupied with the CL, Utd would miss (and not fill the space left by) Keane and that Arsenal would lose Henry and just not be up to the challenge.

So I'd agree, maybe the most anti-climatic season in a while anyway....but I'm getting used to it

...."Any team that concedes as few goals as we concede is going to be tough to play against..." - Fernando Torres on Liverpool

And when I say 'play Gerrard on the left', I mean on the left

                      A defensive mid for £18m?

...and still told us we'd won the most corners.......
