    Scouting in foreign leagues

One thought I had - as we are buying a lot of players from Spain, are we only using Spanish scouts to check out these players?
The reason I ask is that I sometimes wonder if those foreign league scouts have the knowledge of how different and demanding the PL is.

I mean, I would prefer someone who has in dept knowledge of the game in the PL to scout our new players, and preferably not someone who has a background from another league. Sure, spanish scouts have the best knowledge about Spain and the footy there, but what do they know about the PL. A player can be a stand out in Spain but could be torn to pieces here - Luque, Moro.
This is usually the argument for buying PL players instead of foreigners, but most of the best talent is foreign so we need to work on how we assess players.

Of course, a good scout can recognise class when they see it, but to be able to play here you also need another set of attributes that are not that evident and easily seen in other leagues with less physicality and tempo.
I think we can also be honest enough to say that this is one thing that Rafa struggled with, especially the first season he had here - he underestimated how different play is here.

I hope we can avoid more buys that can't deal with our league, aka Morientes, now that we have serious cash to spend.

That is a very good point actually.

However I suspect that Rafa is savvy enough to tell his main scout what qualities he is looking for in a player. If I remember rightly he had a bit of a cull on the scouts when he first arrived. The story was thta he sent them to the same couple of matches and saw what they wrote compared to what he and his scouts saw.

We have got a main scout in Spain but I can't remember his name. He was mentioned in the AS article about the second lad from Malaga that we're after.

EDIT* Just found it, his name is Paco de Gracia

I also think that Rafa is savvy enough, but he has also underestimated the difference in playing style here in the PL, and what it demands from players. Some of his buys, and sadly, also the partial difficulties in the league show this I think.

How do they go about to minimise the risk and to identify the more "hidden" abilities that allow a player to fit the style of play in the PL?

I suppose that you look at physical and mental toughness as well technical ability. Rafa's known to use his network of contacts to check out what a player's personality is like as well as ability.

Also I suspect that Rafa might actually send some scouts out looking for a certain type of player to fit a specific way that he wants to play. Which would be why he saw a lot more in Crouch than I (and a lot of other people) did
