    23 Carra gold

    From today's Guardian.

Is Jamie Carragher England's best defender?

"Jamie Carragher is the supporting actor who keeps stealing the film. And yet the Academy refuses to acknowledge him in an appropriate fashion. No matter how many times Carragher defies the world's greatest attackers, the praise he receives remains resolutely patronising and faint - as if the only reason he excels is because Liverpool's defensive nature means he is given a showy role as the backs-to-the-wall hero.

If it was that easy, everybody would be doing it. All evidence gathered over the last three seasons of the Champions League, football's most relevant genre, suggests that Carragher is a defender of the truest substance. Paradoxically, he is one of the best defenders in Europe and yet only the fourth-best in England, behind John Terry, Rio Ferdinand and Jonathan Woodgate (or, before him, Sol Campbell). Carragher has always lurked in the shadow of Terry, apparently the Stuart MacGill to his Shane Warne; even in 2005, when he inspired Liverpool to the Champions League, it was Terry who was won Uefa's Best Defender award. Yet his performances against the very best sides have been of a consistently higher standard.

Terry was poor at Euro 2004, modest at last year's World Cup and, while Carragher is neither in credit or debit internationally due to lack of exposure, his performances have been more three-dimensional, more sentient, in Europe: Terry, so happy taking up his position at the front post and heading balls away all day in the Premiership, has been given the runaround on more than one occasion, particularly by Barcelona, and even famously lost a battle of strength with Ronaldinho at the Nou Camp in Chelsea's aggregate defeat a year ago.

Last night, Carragher won the battle of strength - physical and mental - so emphatically that he had broken the will of the world's best attacking unit inside the game's first quarter. He does not have pace, but then nor does Terry, and his combination of sixth sense (there is a reason he makes so many last-ditch challenges, and it's not only because he's slow), psychological resolution, furious concentration acute tactical awareness and - yes - backs-to-the-wall heroism make him a truly formidable opponent.

Indeed, given the concentration lapses which continue to compromise the superior talents of Rio Ferdinand, there is an increasingly compelling argument that, at the very, very highest level, Carragher might just be the best English defender around. But the cognoscenti - and the England management - are unlikely to ever recognise him as such."

I know who i'd rather have in my team.

I'd personally love to see Carra never picked to play for england.

Same goes for all our players and their countries...

          England don't deserve Carra.

ive often thought that i rate him so highly as i see him play more than i see other defenders...but i know thats bollocks, hes rated so highly my myself and other liverpool supporters because HE IS WORLD CLASS. I cant comprehend how the bloody press, in the main, the english management & all the "neutral" football fans think otherwise...its truly baffling to me. He would be in the first 4 names on my teamsheet if i were englands manager (gerrard, rooney, CARRA) So 3rd actually. Mclaren is out of his depth....

I have to say, I thought he was overrated up until a couple of years ago - a case of fans giving him too much kudos for the fact he was from Liverpool, with his fall at Highbury as Henry turned him inside out living long in the memory. How wrong I was. What a player.

The only player I get nervous about vs. him is Henry!

I think that a Carra - Terry partnership would be a genuine contender for the best in the world. It would require fullbacks with pace to some degree, but whoever you pair up there will always be some sort of weakness.

Carragher has been in splendid form in the second half of the season. If he hadn't had such a poor start to the season he would be up there in my mind with Drogba and Ronaldo for player of the season.

A Manc said to me on Monday, in a discussion about the game on Saturday, in response to my saying Carragher was fantastic:

"I still think he's ****. His attitude is admirable and he's all heart and guts, but he's still ****. Rio is ten times the player he'll ever be."

                  They just don't get it.

Can you imagine if Terry, Ferdinand, King or any of the others had put in a performance like Carra's last night? Against Barcelona? **** me. It'd be journalistic jizz time.

I quite like the fact he is a bit low key to be honest. I really think that Rio has been ruined by the hype. He is still a gifted footballer but I genuinely think he had the talent to be a true great. However he has stagnated and appears to need his centre half partner to do all the thinking for him these days.

Agreed. I wouldn't have it any other way, frankly. I don't want Carra to play for England - they don't deserve him and I don't think he's arsed about them anyway.

**** thats annoying....I genuinly think Rio is the most OVERRATED player in the prem! hes average at best, ok, hes pretty calm on the ball but by **** he doesnt half make some errors, hes cocky on the ball and generally covered by the rest of his team........wouldnt make the bench at liverpool.:whatever:

for the last few years now carra has had a place for the big name strikers in his back pocket. if rio ferdinand gave that performance last night the press would be raving mad its a disgrace that a bluffer like him built up by self hype gets credit when players like carra consistenly do it against the top attackers.

I suspect Carragher wouldn't give a **** whether the press are falling over themselves or not about his performances, and neither should we.
