Sami Hyypia - One of the best?

Just been on the official site (http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/news/drill...60811-1126.htm) and seen that Sami Hyypia has come 38th in the list of players who shook the Kop.

Sami has been a rock at the centre of the resurgence of Liverpool as a major European force this millennium. Hyypia's medal collection is impressive, his constancy and lack of major injuries will hopefully see him play for the club for a couple more years and hopefully help us reach our 19th title. In recent years with Carragher and especially Gerrard having such a dominant impact on the team, I sometimes feel that Hyypia's contributions have been overlooked. As Carra say in the article

"Everyone talks about foreign players like Zola, Henry and Bergkamp but they never look at Sami. In terms of consistency he's well up there with them, there's no doubt about it. Maybe he can do something out of the blue every now and again but every week, for nine months of the season, Sami Hyypia is your man. He's definitely one of the best foreign players this country has ever seen."

I think Hyypia has been one of the best foreign players to ply his trade in the PL and one of the best defensively for Liverpool in the recent history, but Liverpool have such a fine history of centre half’s where do you think he ranks in the history of Liverpool's central defenders?

“Me having no education. I had to use my brains.”

I would say that he ranks just short of Hansen or Emlyn, but on a par with Thommo.

      High praise indeed.

Indeed Sami has been a colossus and is rightly spoken of as being joint best Houllier signing with Didi. I remember at the time we'd looked at Taribo West , Dario Simic , Golovko (or something) all for more than Sami cost and I remember being terribly frustrated that we hadn't signed one. Sami was a signing out of the blue and what an amazing find he was.

People go on about his failing pace, which is a worry, but even with this fault if you see the teamsheet and he's not on it you fear for the worst. The guy is a rock and, like Didi, will be spoken of as a legend for years to come.

Wasn't the discovery of Big Sami something of a fluke? Hadn't we sent Yeats and Houllier to watch Oliver Bierhoff? Hyypia marked Bierhoff out of the game and the rest is history.

              Ja?

Sami was Houllier's best signing (just ahead of Didi, IMO because of the price).
I agree with Scully - I think he will only be truly appreciated when he's no longer there. I tend to think we take our defensive solidiity for granted these days - Sami is a S T A R!!!

..incidentally the 100 Players.. is hotting up nicely now, eh?

                      Sami is a legend.

He just had a tendency to get caught out/look slow when covering for our not so stellar left sided defender/s.

He will be missed when he is gone, and I hope he stays on to coach us.

That players who shook the kop thing is a load of bollocks anyway.
It's got more than its fair share of joke "cult" players in there.

He will go down in Liverpool history as one of our greatest defenders.

I just hope he gets to complete his medal collection before he retires.

                          He's still a fantastic defender.

Only Hansen was better. We'll only know how much he added when he is not there anymore. His reading of the game is unsurpassed.

sami was "discovered" by a cameraman workin in europe who knocked on parry's door and gave him a video .
he showed it to ged ,liked what they saw and the rest is history.

my fave. sami moment is when we were playin barca at home and he went up with rivaldo for a header i think, rivaldo was all over his back and he just ****ed him to the ground like he was nothing.

to describe him as a rock is too easy but its the perfect description
