    "Slip of the tongue" ?

I bet Ron Atkinson's remark about Marcel Desailly was a "slip of the tongue".

I mean...I don't think Ron Atkinson's racist, he does know lots of black people.

There were at least 3 black people living in Old Swan when Ron grew up there. So he can't be racist at all.

Wasn't Ron Atkinson one of the first managers to buy and play a black lad in top flight football though ?

I'm trying to picture an Arsenal supporter trying to justify that position...

"effing media! they didn't go on ENOUGH about how beautiful and free-flowing our football is!"

What d'you expect from a former editor of the Mail on Sunday. That's precisely the kind of baffoon they'd go for.

Erm, yes, but it was hardly a selfless act, those players done a good job for him.

Oh right, so that makes what he said alright does it ?
I remember when the story was breaking and I had a similar outlook on it myself (as did some work collegues of mine):

"Oh no way, not Big Ron, he signed black players".

                        Then we heard the recording.

Why were the thoughts that led him to say what he said even present ?

Just because he made use of the talents of black players doesn't negate what his deep-seated attitude is.

He even tried to make ammends with a BBC documentary and just made himself look an even bigger idiot.

                        He can shove it.

It quite obviously wasn't a "slip of the tongue" or he wouldn't have been sniggering after he said it.
