Eagles and Reds to recreate semi

Crystal Palace and Liverpool are to recreate their 1990 FA Cup semi-final to raise funds for former Eagles player Geoff Thomas' cancer charity.

The game takes place at Selhurst Park on Tuesday, with Alan Pardew, Ian Wright, Mark Bright and John Barnes some of the players involved.

Thomas, a former England player, was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2003.

His life was saved by a bone marrow transplant from his sister Kay Hill, who was a perfect match four years ago.

The former England international has set up the Geoff Thomas Foundation, which is committed to funding nurses and scientists at five major leukaemia units across Britain.

"I see myself as very lucky to be here and privileged to raise money for people not as fortunate as myself," Thomas told BBC Five Live Sport.

In the 1990 semi-final at Villa Park, Palace surprised Liverpool, winning 4-3 after extra-time in one of the great FA Cup ties.

Rather than re-create that game they should erase it from history.

That's one of the games I'll never get over, like the 88 cup final and the 0-2 defeat to Arsenal on the last day of the season in 88/89.

Me too Incredibly contrasting games. The 9-0 was literally like an exhibition game. We could score at will and Palace were never in the game.
The second game they bossed it and despite getting our noses in front we couldn't keep them out.

I was at both of those games too. The Wimbledon fans (both of them) on the tube back from Wembley were silent and stunned so we were singing songs for them like "The Wombles of Wimbledon"!

I remember going to the Arsenal game with a Welsh Arsenal fan and a Man U fan from Northwich (his Dad worked for R&SA so got some tickets). After the game we went in the Halfway House on Walton Road and the place was absolutely ****ing rocking. The jukebox was blaring out "Saturday Night at the Movies" and there were fellas singing and dancing on the tables. The Welsh lad turned to me and said, "Christ, you'd think Liverpool have just won the league" to which a scouse mate of mine replied, "you wanna be in here when we have, mate!"

A TEAM of Liverpool veterans drew 1-1 at Crystal Palace last night in a Geoff Thomas Foundation match.

The game, which was a re-run of the epic 1990 FA Cup semi-final, raised money for people with leukaemia.

Liverpool opened the scoring as Jamie Redknapp passed the ball to John Barnes, who produced a fantastic finish with the outside of his foot to place the ball into the top corner of the net.

Palace equalised when John Humphrey crossed to Mark Bright, who headed past Bruce Grobbelaar.
