    Pennant & Gonzales

Along with a consistent goal scorer (yawn....) I think most people would agree that it's the wide area's of midfield where we're weakest. For this current season Rafa brought in JP & MG - who both arrived with differing 'acclaim' from Reds' fans.

JP has been discussed to death on here. Peoples opinions on him were divided at the beginning and probably still are. I've gone on record to say he's simply not good enough, but it's obvious he has some talent (the cross for Fowler on Sunday was excellent. More of that please). I'd say that JP has gotten better as the season goes on - but I'm not sure Rafa trusts him enough in the big games.

MG came with a decent goalscoring, hardworking reputation from La Liga where his performances last season whilst on loan did him great credit. Unfortunately, for one reason or another - things haven't worked out for him. Sometimes - he looks like he's trying too hard and he's too eager to impress. So far he hasn't really done himself justice but I expect him to come good as I believe he wants to succeed here, and he has the attributes necessary to be a success out wide.

So we have bought 2 wide players - to do a specific job for the team - and neither of them have really hit it off for me. Maybe having a prolific scorer on the end of their crosses etc will give them the necessary boost to move on to the next level and really make a mark for themselves in the first team. I believe both players will also benefit from another season 'adjusting' to life at LFC - but if it doesn't happen for them - then they should be shown the door. In the meantime, I expect competition on both flanks to increase in the coming season so it will really be a test for JP & MG to prove they can do the business for LFC, and prove that Rafa was right to bring them to our great club in the first place.

I wouldn't bat an eyelid if both Gonzalez and Pennant were sold in the summer.

They're both decent Premiership players, but if we want to win the title we need much, much better.

I'm sure I remember Rafa saying then when Gonzalez ran with the ball it was like it was stuck to his feet. Well I haven't seen any evidence of that so far!
He has looked decent enough, but nowt special. I have a feeling he will improve given more chances though. To be fair to the lad, he seems to play one week, and then not even be in the squad for the next couple of games. No way to get used to the premiership.

I would give both until at least January. Both moved from smaller teams with smaller expectations and deserve time to adapt. Despite the obvious talent in our central midfield that part of the team has hardly sparkled of late.

I was excited about Gonzalez joining the club, and completely non-plussed by Pennant's arrival.

Gonzalez showed glimpses at the start - a couple of early goals and fleeting promise. Pennant really struggled, and looked completely out of his depth.

At the minute I'd say they're in similar positions - squad players. Pennant has steadily improved, whereas Gonzalez picked up injuries, stagnated, lost lots of confidence and consequently has gone backwards. As far as I can see, he's lost all self-belief in terms of running at defenders. He was beating full-backs for fun in La Liga. Now he's too happy to knock the ball backwards or sideways, taking the easy option instead of having a go at the full back. He definitely has ability, and with him being so young, in a new country etc, he can improve with the benefit of a season under his belt. Pennant was expected to adapt quicker and has fewer excuses.

I certainly wouldn't sell either, yet, but I wouldn't expect to see either in the starting XI on the first day of next season.

Let's not forget we have that Leto chappie joining us in the summer who is a left winger. Supposed to be a very highly rated youngster.

            Heard that one before

I think Rafa should (re) sign Beardsley, Barnes and Aldridge. It's all we need to win the league

I'd love to have a McManaman type player in our team right now - someone who has the ability to score from wide midfield and is not afraid to take a defender on.

I agree. We were unstoppable and the football was sensational. If it wasn't for Heysel I'm convinced we would have won at least another couple of European cups (and the blue ****e would've won none ) Can you imagine if we played the great Milan side of the late 80's with Gullit, Rijkaard, Van Basten and Baresi? Awesome.

As for Pennant and Gonzalez...I'd keep Pennant as a squad player but I would get rid of Gonzalez. He looks a real rubbish player.
