    Spearing shines for reserves

Anyone seen him live? Is he a defensive or an attacking midfielder?

A fantastic goal from youth team captain Jay Spearing was the highlight of Liverpool Reserves' deserved 3-0 win over Newcastle United at Kingston Park on Monday night.
Spearing was the best player on the park and netted with a superb curled effort in the 73rd minute of the game. The young scouser has a tremendous will to win attitude and he inspires all around him with his passion and commitment. He spent the majority of last season recovering from a broken leg but he has made a strong return this season and his performance levels have been of a high standard.

Spearing also made the second goal for Craig Lindfield 10 minutes from time, with the striker finishing well from close range.

Another of the heroes from this season's youth cup team Ray Putterill added the third goal with a good finish two minutes from time on his reserve team debut.

Gary Ablett fielded a young team that featured five of the heroes who are in the youth team that has reached the final of the FA Youth Cup for the second season in succession. Spearing, Stephen Darby, Ryan Flynn, Robbie Threlfall and Lindfield all started for Ablett's side at Newcastle while Putterill, Martin Hansen, Michael Burns, Charlie Barnett and Michael Scott were on the bench.

Jack Hobbs captained the team and Paraguayan defender Ronald Huth partnered Gabriel Paletta at the heart of the Liverpool defence.

Newcastle also fielded a young team including the majority of the side that lost to Liverpool in the semi-final of the youth cup last week.

Liverpool played some fine football on a bitterly cold evening in the North East and the passing was of a high standard. Inspired by the promptings in midfield by Spearing and Hobbs the Reds took the game to Newcastle.

Lindfield, who scored twice for the youth team against Newcastle last week, on another day might have had a first half hat-trick. He curled one effort just wide and then saw Newcastle keeper Fraser Forster deny him with a brilliant point blank save. He also shot wide from the edge of the box after a tremendous burst into the Newcastle half from Argentine Emiliano Insua.

Liverpool kept up the pressure and a minute into the second half Hobbs was unlucky to see his deflected effort go just wide after a tremendous move.

Paul Anderson played up front for Liverpool and came close to scoring after 68 minutes but he just couldn't quite turn the ball towards goal as he tried to get on the end of Flynn's right wing cross.

The Reds pressure finally paid off after 73 minutes when they took the lead through Spearing's superb strike and then Lindfield added a deserved goal for himself on the night 10 minutes from time.

Substitute Putterill made it 3-0 two minutes from time to seal an excellent night's work for Ablett's side.

Newcastle United Reserves: Forster, Gate, Shanks, Doninger (Bertram 51), Ramage, Huntington, Troisi, Pattison ((Godsmark 45), Donaldson, Carroll, Lua Lua.

Liverpool Reserves: Padelli, Darby, Insua, Huth, Paletta, Hobbs, Anderson (Barnett 88), Flynn, Lindfield (Putterill 86), Spearing, Threlfall. Subs' unused: Burns, Hansen (GK), Scott.

    Referee: R Wigglesworth.

Liverpoolfc.tv Man of the Match: Jay Spearing. Tremendous performance.

It's nice to see that the Reserves are getting back to winning ways. I guess it just took Ablett a while to settle in.

Doubly nice to see these young local players playing well, guess the club needs that. Tripelly ( ) nice to see that the reserves are not clogged up by high earners we know that will never make it at Liverpool (yes Diao I´m talking about you ).

I think a big difference is that our youth team player now knows that if they are good enough then they will get a chance in the first team and that extra motivation is very important.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

Although i'm not sure exactly what has given them that impression. It's not as if the first team squad is over flowing with home grown talent.

Nice to Lindfield score again, perhaps another Neil Mellor but with pace. How is Hobbs coming along? I'm surprised he has not be loaned out yet.

Hopefully we´ll see a handful of these players being loaned out next year. I´d like to see Anderson, Lindfield, Hobbs and Paletta out on loan next season and maybe Hamill again to a good championship club, at least from january after they have gotten their chance in the League cup.

They play in the CC and some of them have played in the PL.

Houllier played our strongest team in the CC for example and never gave our young players a chance to show what they can do.

He's played quite a bit at centre back but is probably a little small to play there long term. Can play a number of positions obviously. Not seen him live though. By all accounts he has that 'carra frame of mind'

There's quite a few of our youth side that impress me from what i've seen and read more so than in recent years, the likes of:

                    Jay Spearing
                    Ryan Wignall
                    Jimmy Ryan
                    Ray Putterill
                    Charlie Barnett
                    Martin Hansen
                    Astrit Ajdarevic

All seem to be names that look likely to step up to Melwood
                    Thomas Hicks Senior

Jack Hobbs? Is he not a strapping big lad? Six foot plus easy.

Ah that makes sense now, I haven't actually seen Spearing until today. Actually that's what his Official site bio says of him so it must be right. D'oh!

I remember a couple of years ago everyone was saying our U18's side were terrible but the U16's were the best U16 side we'd had for a very long time.

Looks like everyone was right to FA Youth Cup finals in a row is quite impressive.

It was described at some point as Heighways golden generation. It will be very interesting to see how many make it. Especially as in some of the rounds of the youth cup (the one I remember specifically was Chelsea) reports seem to suggest it was the qualit of their teamwork rather than individual excellence which got them through. Still, Rafa is all about the team ethic.
