Stevie G and Jermain Defoe: a match made in heaven?

I saw the game in the pub last night, well, I say I saw it, I looked up at the screen at the most interesting bits, which weren't exactly plentiful.

Anyway, one thing I noticed was how well Stevie G (the best player on the pitch by a million miles) linked up with Jermain Defoe. There was a nice one-two in the build up to Stevie's second, and then Stevie plays a great ball over the top to Defoe for the third goal, which was nicked by David 'Kevin' Nugent.

I seem to remember Stevie setting up Defoe for another couple of England goals too, it might have been when they played Andorra at home.

Alright, it was only Andorra, a side who I would probably look good against, but there's the makings of a good partnership there in the same way as Stevie struck up one with Michael Owen.

I've always rated Defoe, for me he is criminally underused by Spurs and how Andy Johnson starts ahead of him for England I don't know. I'd love it if we could get him in the summer for about £7m-£10m. I don't think he's much worse than the 'big names' we are always linked with, it's just that we see a lot more of Defoe than them, and so we'll see when he has a bad game, which we don't see with the others.

Just something to mull over on a Thursday afternoon...

Yeah nice link up between the two of them but...
Defoe doesn't do it for me, in spells he's dynamite but he's far too inconsistent at every level.
Great little player on his day but he doesn't have enough of those days.

is that because he doesnt have the confidence of his manager? not exactly a prolific scorer although in the right team i reckon he could be very, very good

He's not even a regular in the Spurs team and his goalscoring record has never impressed me. He'd do better than our current crop of strikers but I think we need better in our first XI

Tbh I think Stevie would give any quality poacher plenty to work with. Defoe probably isn't of the standard we need but he is exactly the type of player that SG and others will look to as a target for a through ball. We definitely need a quality player of that ilk and I'm sure we'll get one.

That's my point. Get him in a good top 4 side (i.e us) and he'll improve.

His goalscoring totals over the years reads something like 8, 9, 13 (his best return), 8, 8.

And David Platt never shuts up about him being a natural goalscorer!

For some reason, Defoe reminds me of the little one...

**** his record. He hasn't been playing in a team as good as us yet has he?

I wouldn't say he's a natural goalscorer. I just think that some people are getting carried away with us having a bit of money and are just assuming we'll be spending £30m-£40m on a striker, I can't see it.

Defoe would be a good alternative and would score goals for us.
