The Flying Pig In Fine Form

He's been feeling a little left out recently with not having many medals to his name and a lot of the old legends having reunion dinners coming up (after all, 62 to 66 was the real start to the success of medal winners and he was our goalie before handing over the reigns to Ray C), and this year is the 30th Anniversary of something rather special, and will be many more reunions in the coming years for that crowd, so before we all forget who we owe a debt of gratitude to, may I take this opportunity of saluting one of our great forefathers of the success we all take pride in today:

Gentlemen, I give you Tommy Lawrence:

Without doing any research he would have to be 68 or so.

Clem took over around 1970, and say he was 30-31 ....

No it most defo is not, if you can read my sig then it might look that way, if you can't or have sigs turned off, then what would be the point without some reference as to where to source?

It was a personal request from me that we got something done for him though, there is plenty around of everybody else and this is his first venture into this foray.

I'm sorry if it came across that way, it was not meant to, just my tribute to the man that was keeping goal in front of me as a kid in the team that started The Liverpool Way that we know today.

I've seen Tommy knocking about Northwich a few times.

<stalker>Anyone know if he lives around that area these days?</stalker>

                      Hi all !

Kelly from Retro Reds here, thought I'd call in and say hello, as our chief cheerleader Del (lfcforever) always mentions us.

This will be the only time I mention our 'shop' as such as I appreciate fans don't come on the boards to be spammed or have "buy this" / "buy that" thrown at them. I just thought now would be an appropriate time to answer any questions and let people know who we are and what we stand for.

Anyone who uses ebay will be aware of the incredible amount of fake Liverpool memorabilia that is out there, especially stuff involving our current players. As eBay, trading standards, the police and even the club seem powerless to act on this, we decided to do something ourselves.

Last September we approached Tommy Smith, who is one of the more high-profile ex-Reds, and he agreed to work with us and arrange private signing sessions with former players so we could get authentic autographs out to collectors at very low prices. The idea was twofold. First we would make the prices so low that the fakers - who couldn't authenticate their items - wouldn't find it worthwhile to produce their own items, and secondly, it meant that the players themselves would actually receive something.

We differ from other memorabilia dealers as we only work with former reds and we don't hang around airports, training grounds or hotels sticking pictures in Steven Gerrard's face and then selling them for £30-£40. All our items come directly from the players and they are very well looked after.

At the end of the day, these are the people who made our club great and it is an absolute honour for Bob, my husband especially, and myself to work with them.

To date, we have had sessions with the following players :
Tommy Smith, Ian Callaghan, Joey Jones, Jimmy Case, Steve Heighway, Phil Neal, Ian St John, Ron Yeats, Ian Rush, Gerry Byrne, Chris Lawler, Ronnie Moran and Tommy Lawrence and have a session lined up with Ronnie Whelan next week. We've possibly had 40 sessions altogether with these players and hope to add 1 or 2 new players every month as we grow.

At the end of the day, our purpose is to put our great players back in the spotlight and make a few bob for them (and us, obviously), without fans having to pay an extortionate amount to the bigger genuine dealers or the fakers.

We have had talks with Brian Hall at Liverpool, and are unable to get access to any current players, so the trade in fake Gerrard's and Carraghers will continue. But nobody will make a bean out of the players we have worked with apart from the players themselves.

We are a legitimate, registered business and hope to be accepted by Redmen all over as simply trying to look after some of our past greats whilst providing a genuine memorabilia service for those that do colelct autographs.

We're still in our first year of trading - well, we're 7 months old now - so the website and overall presentation needs to be spruced up, but neither of us are computer experts and we're more concerned with building up the stock at this stage than having a snazzy website (although if there are any expert site designers around that would like to build us a site in exchange for some signed photos / shirts, we're open to offers !)

Finally, a note on the players themselves. Without exception, they are all absolute gentlemen, even Tommy Smith ! Since we started, we have had no problems contacting them and they have been a delight to spend time with at our sessions. I must confess, I'm too young to have seen any of them play, but even I appreciate their place in our history. (Bob, of course, is somewhat older and is like a big kid whenever we have a new player sign for the first time)

So... I hope you don't mind me calling in. I tend to look after the admin / emails etc as I type quicker, but he's the one who looks after the players and is more aware of who's who than me. I'm only a bird remember !

As previously mentioned, I honestly won't push our shop here, as I know it isn't the place, but if anybody ever needs to contact any of the players we work with, or would like anything signed, we'll do our best to help out, so feel free to mail us anytime.

Tommy Lawrence, to answer the questions above, is 67 in May, fit as a fiddle and lives in Warrington near Sir Roger. This is us in the pub after the signings :-)

                      Thanks for your time.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

That should probably be the other way round.
