    Hicks Interview

Saw an add on ESPN here in Oz for ShockerNet Press Pass saying they will be talking to the new owner. Now I would rather cut off my testies with a rusty bread knife than watch the show but now I feel I have to and then get pissed off when he says nothing of note, but if he does I will chuck it on here.

So he didn't say anything of note then?
    Oh I don't know.

      Missed it first time round.
Just uploading the vid now. Seems to be the same old answers but did say that the way the Glazers took over the scum was a lesson in how not to do it

While vid is uploading here is a brief transcript.

How did your interest in Liverpool com about?

George Gillett called me just before christmas and said "would you have any interest in buying a premiership football team with me?" and I said "George I already own two teams." but we started talking about it and I spent a good deal of time that weekend on the internet just reading about Liverpool and what I saw was just an incredible history and an incredible passion and that really got my juices going, and it's at a really good business model now with the increase of the television revenue compared to the other professional sports businesses I am in.
I am learning all the time, learning about football just like I had to learn about ice hockey, but we have great management here with Rick Parry and Rafa and I have a great pardner in George and we are going to build a great stadium that's what we are going to build.

There is a lot of heritage there, how keen are you to respect that?

We're committed. We have to build a new stadium to be competitive, much as we would like every game to be cosy like at Anfield and compete, we can't not when you look at Manchester United or Arsenal or certainly the big Spanish and Italian teams. So I think that our fans want us to compete so that is something that we'll all have to adjust to, and make sure that that's something unique and special to Liverpool and it has to be big to allow us to compete.
I haven't figured out the transfer system yet but im just going to leave that to Rafa, we are going to give him the resources but we are not going to be stupid about it, we're not going to duplicate what our err um Russian err partner um owner has done and we are going to try and do what Rafa says he needs to do.

How important are the fans to the future of Liverpool and to yourself?

They are the asset, thats what we bought, the goodwill of Liverpool football club and it's fans, not just the fans who come to the matches but the fans all over the world.

Can you understand the concerns that supporters might have had when you first came along?

Well because we are not English, there were a lot of opportunities for local people to buy Liverpool football club but they didn't, so it turns out that it was going to be Tom and George or the Sheik of Dubai and i think that out of any alternative this club had we are the perfect new custodians of this franchise.

Did you have a look at the way that Manchester United were taken over?

Well that was very different, that was kinda an unfriendly tender offer and we were invited. George and I have a good relationship with the media because we talk to them all the time with our other sports businesses and for us to see what happened two years ago was a lesson in how not to do it.
And what about the coverage you have got?
The UK press is notorious and we were quite worried about what might happen but we were thrilled with how it turned out, I think the fans just wanted resolution, everything we said was sincere and I think people felt that.

Why are so many Americans interested in buying clubs?

I think it is a unique propriety consumer product, it's unique media, it's something you can't make up in Hollywood you just have to go and play it. It's not just Americans it is international business people that see it as an opportunity, the most interesting question is why don't the English see it as an interesting opportunity, I think its their respect of privacy which i am totally respectful of.

'Take that poof bandage off, and what do you mean YOUR knee, it's LIVERPOOL'S knee !'

"Sorry, boss, I should have kept my legs together," said Lawrence. "No, Tommy, your mother should have kept her legs together!," replied Shankly.
