    J Pennant Appreciation

Just thought I would fire up a Lionel Richie thread as for me he has been a bit special this season. I have always admired his skills previously but he was a little nearly won the race kind of players until Rafa got his hands on him.

So far his movement, pace and footballing brain have been outstanding. He is growing in confidence each game and for me he is doing everything right, right now. Tracking back, getting stuck in, making clever runs and anticipating movement sublimely. He has the potential to become a world class player if handled right if you ask me. I know he is no spring chicken and really should not be mentioning potential but I think if he could be a real force down the right flank next season.

Great player glad his is coming good on his talent. Definitely a first team player and McClown is mad not to have him in the National set up

He was absolutely ****e for the first 10 weeks of the season bar a decent game or two. Ceding possession, slipping all the time, knocked off the ball easily, either overhitting crosses or not getting them past the first defender. It really was that terrible. I was astounded at how poor he was at the start, I'd expected him to be nothing fancy but supply a steady stream of decent crosses. It just wasn't happening for him, the nerves had built up and I felt he was trying too hard. Even his mate on here J-P had lost faith in him and it really wasn't looking like he was going to make it for us.

Since then he has really started to show more confidence and has bedded in quite nicely. He'll never be a regular goalscorer IMO but he can definitely pose a threat with the quality of his final ball. Always available for a pass, keeps the ball much better for us now, gets in quality crosses at a very good rate.

I still want to see another RM brought in but I'm more than happy for us to have Pennant in the squad, we need quality in depth and I now feel pretty confident when he's in possession. He's no longer a player that I keep an eye on to see how he's fitting in unlike say Gonzalez, I think he's fully adjusted and this is what we can expect from now on. Definitely deserves his place in the squad next season. That blinder he scored against Chelsea really did him some good.

Yes he's a good player but some in here think he's ****e. It's like Peter Crouch ... Some are still not convinced he's a great player.

Agreed with all but the points in bold italics. Apart from being involved in the first and last goals on Saturday, he looked lost in his own half. I can recount the number of times he lost concentration and just ball-watch as the opponent wheeled into the left side. There were at least 3 times when he didn't close them down and after doubled-teaming on Arbarleo, they had the time and space to whip in crosses. Even Beckham can defend better for crying out loud!

He is already 24 going on 25, usually wingers peak at this age. He needs to concentrate and focus more and not drift off into the sunset and ball-watch if he ever wants to be a better player. Otherwise, he'll have the 'just-short-of' tag on his collar for the rest of his career.

          Agreed!

He is a very good player who doesnt get the credits he deserves a lot of the time.

ive been the first to slag him all year but all credit for yesterday. the problem is now instead of building on the back of a great performance like yesterday the **** is gonna make us suffer another 10 games of being mediocre and who gives a **** about maclaren and england

Well for me he had a number of poor games to start with but then started to get better and better. Now he is very dangerous and does not do the obvious, is patient, creative and decisive. This will be the first time he has been with so many quality players, facilities and been seen as a Senior player, we may have got him, just at the right time.

His recent performances have been top draw stuff, Man of the match if Crouchinino did not bang in three .

                Happy for him

I was pretty damning in my assessment of Pennant earlier in the season, and I will have to say he's started performing much better - however I don't believe he is good enough to challenge for the RM spot if we are to genuinely go for the title.

...and if he could shut up talking about England and how he deserves to be in the squad it would certainly help.

I've always wanted him to be given a proper chance. And that means a season at least.

There were people on here wantin rid of him after two months FFS.

I'm delighted that he's proven them wrong. He has a tendency though to switch off, which cost us the goal on Saturday. If you're job is to defend the post on corners JP then defend it. Dont stroll out with your hands on your hips as you did on Saturday.

That said he was probably only second to Crouch for MOM

Until he starts scoring goals a season he'll never be anything more than decent back up.

He's an attacking midfielder/winger, he should be netting 5+ goals a season.
