He may not be the best defender in the world but hes usually very effective. Brave in the tackle with explosive pace and rocket like power. If he was Brazilian and not Ginger and Scandinavian the football world would be falling over itself with platitudes. He for me never gets the respect and credit he deserves for all he has done for this club. Sure all players have dips in form and sure he had one of these recently but I think its fair to say he earned a little time and patience from the supporters to find his touch again. Which for me recently he has.

JAR is right up there with Garcia for game changing ability. At this level it’s the ability to produce something special which a lot of the time is the difference between winning a losing. There only a handful of defenders around the world who are as Dangerous and effective as Risse. Always the way the more you gain in Attack, defense suffers but for me he has it right on.

One of my favorite Liverpool players in the Modern age, With the exception of his recent dip in form you always know what you are going to get from JAR and usually he does not let you down. And he regularly provides special moments like last night. His Goal was the catalyst for the onslaught which followed.

Walk on Riise Walk on !

You gush a little my friend but take Riise's goals out of the equation in the last few years and the fortunes of this club might well have been worse.
He's a special striker of the ball and as long as he stays fairly solid defensively I'd have him in the team and I agree he deserves more recognition.

    Pace though, he has not.

I like Riise. I think the truth lies somewhere between Nicey and Lecters views. He has been consistently decent as a fullback. Aurelio is Rafa's first choice because he makes much more aggressive runs and is a splendid crosser from deep locations, not I suspect because Rafa rates him as a better defender than Riise.

Well disregard Aurelio and explain why in Rafa's first two seasons Traore got quite a few games ahead of Riise at leftback

Was it because of Traores aggressive runs and deep crosses

We really did have a lack of left sided players then though, so Riise was required in midfield a fair amount. I will however give you that Riise does go through phases when he seems incapable of any form of positioning, even if in general I think he is pretty good.

I refuse to believe that Rafa in his tactial wisdom would continue to use Riise at Left Back if he didn't rate him as a GOOD defender. Effectively we already have a title-winningly good defence - it's other areas of the team which need bolstering to make the final step up.

I actually think Riises best position is midfield

IMO Riise is an in between player

He cant defend well enough to be an out and out fullback and he lacks quality in the final third to be a midfielder / winger

Best suited to a wingback position which we dont play often enough

Scores goals and spectacular ones and that but contributes nothing else imo

I also wish he would feck right off from set pieces I hate the way we roll the ball to him so he can take a 50 yard run up to smash it as hard as he wants. Its a 1 in 100 chance of working and a complete waste of a freekick

I would love to agree with you here but as the alternative is usually Gerrard tonking it into the first man I'm going to have to side with the extra few seconds of anticipation before it all goes wrong.

As I said earlier I'd be interested to see how many times Riise has actually played at leftback or midfield over the last few years under Rafa

I think it comes down to Hobsons choice at times (ie no other option)

Its been pretty telling that when Aurelio has been fit hes gone straight in at leftback

Yeah, I think it's quite clear that Rafa has "issues" with Riise, and particularly his defending. He's flipped his lid on the touchline at him several times this season.
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’
