Wenger pips Rafa to land starlet

ARSENE WENGER is set to pull off another amazing cut-price transfer coup for Valencia defender Yago Fernandez - for just £100,000.

The Portugal Under-19 centre-half has agreed a pre-contract deal with Arsenal and will sign a five-year contract in July.

Fernandez, 19, is rated a huge prospect in Portugal, but Arsenal have been able to get him on the cheap because he was only on an amateur deal with the Spanish club and playing for their B team.

But Arsenal's scouting network have moved in before Valencia were able to convince him to sign a professional deal.

Wenger has also beaten Liverpool to get Fernandez as Kop boss Rafa Benitez also tried to sign him from his old club.

Fernandez said: "This is the biggest opportunity of my life because I know Wenger likes to wrestle naked with young players and I will have more chances to do that at Arsenal than in Spain."

Wenger has built a reputation for getting promising teenagers on the cheap, having nabbed Cesc Fabregas, Mathieu Flamini and Nicolas Anelka before they signed professional forms.

All well and good buying for the future but we have more than enough 'young uns' on our books as it is.

We should be looking to bring in players for the now as opposed to the future but of course if some whizzkid comes along we should do out utmost to snap em up.

yup fully agree mate, we've snapped up a load of prmising kids for the future, not all of them will come through, even at Arsenal.

I saw an excerpt of the papaers on SSN this mornign that Wenga had pipped Beni to Alves - this source was the paper we don't like (not that they are credible in any case).
