Liverpool boss Benitez won over by Finnan
    tribalfooball.com - April 06, 2007

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez admits he's been won over by Steve Finnan this season.

He told liverpoolfc.tv: "I had reports (when Benitez first arrived) and some people were saying, hmm. The season before I think he was not playing at his level. Now he is. Gerard Houllier said to me that he was a good player, but people weren't telling me he was fantastic. He's played really well over the three years. Steve was very professional and showed his quality.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

I am so sorry and I know it's in poor taste but I read the title as Rafa run over by Finnan

I thought the quotes were rather guarded and not overflowing with the superlatives, lavished on Mascherano last week. In the context of the full interview I thought the praise was extracted by the interviewer.

Still, Finnan is a legend and currently the best and most consistent right back in the Premiership. He must be made steel as he never gets injured.

Finnan's fate is not to be fĂªted.

Even when he plays immaculately like the other night, people continue to overlook his massive contribution.
He is incredibly similar to Denis Irwin in demeanour and consistency.
He seems very unassuming and content to be 'in the background'.

I think its a case of filling the new player with the confidence to pay, and not saying too much to get a good performer in the first team not to go into the comfort zone, he mentioned finnan playing better now he has competition for his place. I dont think he wants him to step back a gear after Rafa lavishing praise on him.
Bill shankly to Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee:
'Take that poof bandage off, and what do you mean YOUR knee, it's LIVERPOOL'S knee !'

"Sorry, boss, I should have kept my legs together," said Lawrence. "No, Tommy, your mother should have kept her legs together!," replied Shankly.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is eager to work out a new deal for Steve Finnan, but has told the Irishman to try and be more consistent.

Finnan has been a virtual ever-present in the Reds side this term but Benitez feels his performances have suffered as a result.

The defender starred in the 3-0 victory over PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday but Benitez reckons he played better in Liverpool's last two campaigns.

"He is playing very well now, but maybe the last season was better because this year he has played more games and more minutes than the others," Benitez explained in The Daily Star.

"He has played every game and also with the national team so it is not easy to be consistent.

"He is always a player who will play well but last season and the season before he was playing better."

Finnan's current deal expires at the end of next season but there are several other players due for contract talks in the summer and Benitez is not prepared to discuss individuals.

"We want to do something before the end of the season. All of the players are important and I cannot talk about the situation of each player," he said.

"It's fair to say I am really pleased with my squad and would like to progress with all the players."

We managed to rectify it, though, because it now says, "Cook" where it once said "Cock", and "Pass" where it once said "Piss", so it’s slightly less rude.

                        Strange comment.

Finnan has been our most consistent player this season IMO.

I think reading the article that Rafa means he wants consitency year to year rather than week to week.

i.e he was better in his lat 2 seasons. Therefore he has been consistantly not as good as he was when he was consitantly better therefore offering a consistantly lower level of consistancy than the previous consistantly high levels of consistancy. I fyou see what I mean.

Or just keep it up Steve lad.

Finnan's been one of our best signings in recent times and definitely up there with GH's best. If anyone deserves a new contract it's Finnan.
