Oh i'm not disputing that, it has worked out for him, but it could just have easily gone the other way and at 18.5mil that'd be a very expensive mistake. I still don't think he's that good of a player, and fergusson could have probably got a similar/better player from around europe for half the price. But it's worked out for them and they're top of the league, however i'd put that more down to ronaldo's form than anything else, not Carrick.

When deciding the value of a player, clubs dont just look at his ability on the pitch. They look at personality, the job at hand, will he adapt to the squad, the league, the manager, will he improve the team, are we more likely to win something with him on board, how many shirts will he sell.

Are there better defensive midfielders out there? Yes of course, we have 4 of them.
Was Carrick the right man for ManU? Absolutely.
Was he worth 18.5m? For ManU at that particular time, Yes.

Put it this way. If Rafa identifies someone who could be a vital cog in our wheel then he will go for it, no matter about the price. It's what Ferguson has done in the past re:Carrick, Rooney etc ... The thing is to identify the right player for our team and for what it's missing, it could be a bargain buy ala Voronin or a big transfer such as Eto'o.

He's played his part yes, but he's not an outstanding player and would only class him as above average, sure they needed that type of player, we got Alonso for 10.5mil because rafa made a smart purchase, slur alex got carrick for 18.5 mil becuase he isn't as shrewd a manager. Point still stands that carrick isn't worth 18.5mil of anyones money, wether he helped man u get the title or not (which by the way they don't have yet). Like I said Ronaldo has been their star performer not Carrick.

Forlan... there have been other mistakes. All managers will make them, impossible for forsee how all players turn out. 80%+ for big signings is great IMO.
