It depends. I can't see Rafa allowing any defender *that* much freedom. Furthermore, it also depends who's in front of him. If it's Gerrard, then Alves simply has to stick to that right flank and be prepared to stay back if necessary.

Yeah, cos Robben and Joe Cole had so much defensive responsibility when they used that formation didn't they?!

There's no way in hell you could call Stevie an 'out and out attacker', notice I was careful to phrase it a certain way...
"the correct decision would have been a penalty for us a red card for Gattuso and a yellow for Stevie"

"i personally hold you and several other gob****es responsible for the chaos this club is in"

Chelsea won the title by using Drogba as a lone striker...

As did Arsenal. In fact, Henry started from so deep it was almost like a 6 man midfield. with lots of runners from deep.
United in recent seasons have followed the lone striker formation, especially in Europe.
Bill shankly to Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee:
'Take that poof bandage off, and what do you mean YOUR knee, it's LIVERPOOL'S knee !'

"Sorry, boss, I should have kept my legs together," said Lawrence. "No, Tommy, your mother should have kept her legs together!," replied Shankly.
