It makes no sense to me....

There has been loads of speculation regarding Dirk Kuyt or another striker.
Many so called insiders say that moves are only likely to occur once we have officially qualified for the CL proper, and most people tend to concur with this.

Personally I cannot go along with that theory.
If a deal has been reached, a deal has been reached.
I could not see a player, holding on to see if a team really made it through to the next stage, and conversely, I cannot see a player hanging around waiting for a team to do something.
Either the club wants the player, or the player wants the cluib, and that's that.

If nothing happens with Kuyt before the weekend then I don't think we'll get him.

I seriously don't think that CL qualification has anything to do with these delays, and believe that it is something else.

    Thoughts?

Maybe the stumbling block is a couple of million Euros or the way the fee is to be paid. This may explain the potential delay in signing the lad.

I think it does have something to do with Euro CL qualification. Maybe we won't be able to afford it if we don't qualify or maybe he wants CL football. Probably both.

before i reply to this, can i ask why this wasnt posted in the dirk kuyt thread right below this one??? hopefully mods will move it. seems to be a lot of koptalk-esque duplicate threads seeping into the site.

re kuyt ,its a funny one alright, we've had an 'insider' on here saying a it was a 'done deal' but clearly it isnt a done deal.

but i do believe we will get him if we qualify for CL as we'll have the funds. its no secret rafa wants him as hes said so publicly so the only reason for not having made a bid yet must be because of lack of funds.

i think we'll sign a right back and kuyt as it seems kromkamp is all but gone

i think feyenoord might well agree a fee with a few clubs, but kuyt will discuss with all of them and maybe is waiting to see if we are in the mix before he makes his mind up as he probably wants to come to us

This thread is not DK specific, but it appears that this sceanrio presents itself every year... and every year the concensus is that we cannot buy player A, B or C unless we have definitely qualified for the CL, due to money etc etc....

This year it just happens to be that DK (and possibly even Alves) are the potential transfers that may be affected...

          It's something that I don't buy into.

why? it makes perfect sense. we are guaranteed an extra 10/12M minimum from qualifying so it makes perfect sense not to spend it until we qualify

Fair enough, but it always seems that it is the valuation that is the stumbling block.

The finance people would have done their calculations, and should know exactly what we have to work with. Our targets are identified at early stages (generally), and the longer we wait to get them, the less likely they are to join us, especially if they are a big name, and other clubs are also interested.

In most instances it appears we don't conclude deals as our valuation is a bar or two off. Surely contingencies exist enabling us to spend the little extra, if it means that the squad will be strengthened and we can possibly progress a little further, which in itself may bring in the additional revenue? It also appears that sometimes we don't make players feel as though they are wanted badly enough (such as the Gerrard fiasco 13 months ago). Last season we originally had the option to get Owen back for £11m (or so we have been led to believe), but we procastinated and procastinated....eventually Newcastle came in, he felt wanted and needed, and made up his mind where to go.

I also think if we really really wanted Alves badly enough he could have manufactured a move at a better price.

While qualifying for the CL certainly has a roll to play in certain decisions, these should be decisions that affect future transfer activity, and not current. We should not plan for transfers unless we have the cash, and the CL cash does not just come in over night....we may only receive it in several months to a year's time.

I think we have done a great deal in the transfer market this Summer. I suspect we could have bought in Kuyt if we had sold Cisse, but we didn't which changed the situation. We are already working with plan B finance wise and so you have to expect that any really large purchases (£10m+ in all likelyhood) will be dependant on us gaining CL qualification and the attendant cash.

Every year fans get over excited about who we are likely to sign, which is why it always appears that we loose out on signings.

People also think that other teams will just fold in negotiations, but Seville have no reason to sell Alves. His main goal seems to be to get into the Brazilian team and he is more likely to do that from a base in Spain I would think. So he is not going to go on strike and he has several years on his contract.

I think the reason we havent signed him is because we are waiting for cl qualification but I think we still need another striker even if we dont qualify.

Another reason might be that Rafa is waiting to see what happens with Trezuguet, he is having a meeting with Juve tomorrow to sort out his future and they will probably let him out on loan.
