    Benitez may rest big guns.

    Benitez may rest big guns
    Apr 10 2007
    by Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

RAFA BENITEZ is considering resting his big guns for tomorrow’s visit of PSV Eindhoven.

The Liverpool boss will assess his options after training this afternoon, but he may be tempted to hand more fringe players an opportunity to protect the 3-0 lead.

However, Benitez is also cautious about presuming the tie is over.

“I haven’t decided which team to use yet, but we do have options,” said Benitez.

“The best idea is to approach the game to win, and then maybe we can look at the situation at half-time and decide whether we can change it.

“I must talk to the players and be sure they realise they must still work hard. We can approach the game with confidence, but I also remember what happened in Istanbul.

“It’s not impossible for a team to win when they’re losing 3-0.

“Of course, in normal circumstances it will be very difficult to do this, but we must be careful and professional.”

Xabi Alonso insists PSV will be treated with the same respect as last week.

“Of course we’re really happy with the result we had in Eindhoven, but you must always remember there’s still one game to play and in football anything is possible. We know this from our own experiences,” said Alonso.

“I know what everyone else is saying about the situation, but as players we can’t think we’re in the semi-final yet.

“We must be professional and try to do the same at Anfield as we did in the first leg.”

That said, Alonso accepts tomorrow’s fixture won’t be as intense or as high pressured as it would have been if Liverpool didn’t have such a big advantage.

“Yes, it’s been good to put ourselves in a strong position so maybe we could feel more relaxed when watching the Chelsea versus Valencia game,” he said.

“We know we’re in a position where we can analyse how they play both games before we play PSV again, and that may help us in the future – but only if we get through to the semi-final.

“We know what we are playing for and we know what it means to get to the final, and even more importantly, what to do to win it.”

Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

It wouldnt surprise me to see say Hyypia in for carra and maybe SG on the bench with Pennant WR, Xabi and one of Masher/Bolo or Momo in the middle with Robbie and Bellers upfront.

I can see a good few first teamers being omitted from the starting line-up tonight.
I also believe that Stevie needs the rest most, followed by Carra, Mascherano (on a yellow), Xabi and Finnan.
I reckon we can put out a strong enough team for victory would also hope that none of them need to be used as substitutes.

No way should we rest Gerrard imo, lets get through to the semi's first, with Arsenal slipping up we can rest Gerrard in the next league game - we may be 3-0 up but lets go and put this game to bed an be 2-0 at half time - PSV will have to throw everything they have at us, which isn't a lot, Our defence should cope with whatever they have and we should be looking to attack not defend.

        I reckon
        ------------Reina-------------

        Finnan---JC---Agger----Arbeloa

        Gerrard---Xabi---Mash----Riise

        ------Bellamy----Crouch

get the game killed off first and then look to give Gerrard/JC etc etc a rest, with the likes of Pennant/Hyppia/Fowler/Gonzalez/Momo on the bench we will have enough options to change things round, for sure.

I see what you're saying, but we don't need to risk him at the start, do we?
They have to score 3 goals. The players on the pitch are more than capable of taking care of things and Stevie is looking pretty lethargic at the mo if you ask me.

I dont know but he only has one. It takes three for a suspension

fair enough, maybe swap Gerrard for Pennant and I'd be confident that team will still be too strong,

i really hope we start both Crouch and Bellamy, I'd be gutted to see us playing just one man up front at home to a ****e team when we are already 3-0 up, imo you would never see the mancs or chavs do it.

PSV coach Ronald Koeman has named a youthful squad for the Champions League quarter-final second leg against Liverpool on Wednesday.
Koeman has included untried teenagers Rens van Eijden and Olivier ter Horst in his 18-man party following the withdrawal of several first-teamers through injury.

Ibrahim Afellay, Jan Kromkamp, Edison Mendez, Michael Reiziger and Alex have all been ruled out of the trip to Anfield, while Alcides, John de Jong and Género Zeefuik are not eligible to play.

Meanwhile, PSV had their lead at the top of the Dutch Eredivisie cut to just two points following a 2-1 defeat at NEC on Saturday.

Confirms it for me. I know its the quarters and all that jazz. But really this game is in the bank. PSV are the worst QFists i can remember.

                          No Dudek though.

I know what you mean - I'd personally go with Robbie and Bellamy for the first hour, and then bring on Crouch for the last 30 to hopefully use his aerial threat to get on the end of some more good crossing from JP (and hopefully Speedy too).

good to hear - sounds like Koeman has just conceded this tie, I know there is not much you can do about injuries but ever since his "I'd take a 0-0" comment before their HOME tie I've thought they have just wrote themselves off
