    feet on the ground..

Great win on Sunday with two evenly matched teams, given Chelsea's lesser number of friendlies played and our decision to leave out four first teamers.

Mourinho, in typical fashion moaning that we were ahead of schedule in terms of fitness, conveniently overlooking (as have most of the press) the fact that we left out Gerrard, Alonso, Bellamy and Hyypia and STILL had enough in the tank to outplay and outsmart them.

A great confidence booster ahead of the new season??

Maybe. I look at the Liverpool sites and you'd think we'd won the league though, rather than what is ultimately an unimportant friendly with the least important trophy of the Premiership season.

It's nice to win of course, and it's good to serve a reminder to those who've arrogantly dismissed any of Chelsea's rivals in this years Premiership race. It's funny how after one game, everyone is convinced that Chelsea are stuttering somewhat while we have become an overnight force.

There's a fair few things that need to be considered ahead of the Premiership season, and certainly no assumptions should be made. Yet.

We still need a striker. I think Bellamy has and will do exceptionally well. Whether he flicks the selfdestructive switch a couple of times remains to be seen, but aslong as he continues in his current vein on the pitch, we have a real player on our hands. He'll get a few goals, but his importance will be in creating just as much as finding the back of the net. We're still in the same situation though. We have one natural finisher at the club. An aging, paceless, injury prone Robbie Fowler. Crouch and Bellamy look as though they will continue to be good foils, but for who? Unless we get a Kuyt or a Klose in, then I feel their unselfishness will eventually turn to frustration for the fans.

This one player will be the difference between competing over the course of the season, or eventually becoming an also ran. Arsenal have Henry, Chelsea have Shevchenko, class will usually tell over time.

The rest of the squad seems FINALLY complete, no gaping holes and an abundance of options across the rest of the pitch, particularly in defence and midfield. Great stuff, it's been by and large and excellent summer.

As for Chelsea, people seem to have overlooked the fact that Crespo, Gudjohnsen and Duff have left. Kalou and Sheva need to be bedded in, while the loss of backup option Carlton Cole, means that Mourinho's assertions that he'll adopt a more classic 442 approach this season are a bit flawed.

In essence they have two out and out strikers now in Drogba and Shevchenko, while Cole, Robben and Kalou provide the rest of the attacking threat.. hmmm, for all their quality, take away one of Shevchenko or Drogba for any length of time, and I think we might see them struggle. It's a big 'if' though.

Also, add the fact that three attacking players have gone, and a reshaping of the attack is due, this could spell an indifferent start for Chelsea. That's before we touch on their lack of match fitness..

A decision to only play three friendlies and hardly a sniff of action for the World Cup lads might see them make a start that undone Liverpool's aspirations last season. Longterm though towards the end of the season it might see them fresher than their rivals. It's a gamble of titanic proportions by Mourinho though, we all saw how much it effected us not being able to prepare for the season. It hit us at the key moments of the campaign, the start and the period after Christmas when fitness (or a lack of) often catches up with the least prepared teams..

So all is not cut and dry either way, there's reason enough to believe Chelsea might be hampered by a bit more misfortune this time round, though with the squad they have it's theirs to lose. While its safe to say, Liverpool havent looked this good in a longtime, though it's important we keep our feet on the ground. A potential banana-skin starter at Sheff United, with that horrible cnut Warnock, and THAT away leg qualifier to get out the way, could see our world turned upside down in the space of a week.

It's early days and lets remember that eh? It's essential we stay focused and don't go into the season thinking we have the upperhand.

We're all on the same points.

    Great post!

ESPECIALLY the point you made about people overlooking the fact that Chelsea losing a trio of able backups over the summer - its a point that I made previously and something that may slow down Chelsea a little should some of their regulars get hit by major injuries or Moaninho fails to get his new formation working...

What did Chelsea's lesser number of friendlies have to do with our beating them? It's just spin by Mourinho before the game to make it look like no big deal if they lost, but even better if they'd won. In our friendlies we were mainly playing a mixture of youth team players, squad players and and new signings - the main players had cameo roles in later games, with the World Cup players only figuring in the last friendly as I recall for part of the game. So it's not as if the team we put out in Cardiff had been playing as a unit for half a dozen games so were sharper than Chelsea. Agger hadn't even kicked a ball in a friendly, but still had Drogba in his pocket.

So let's give ourseleves a pat on the back for once. Our key players only came on for the last half hour on Sunday, but we still outplayed them and thoroughly deserved our win. All this fitness cobblers is just that - and a convenient diversion away from the fact that Chelsea lost because Liverpool hadn't read the script.

One day we'll beat Chelsea and get the praise we deserve and not get the usual convenient excuses trotted out by Maureen and duly swallowed up by the media - and even our more gullible fans

            .
Not forgetting to mention that we started our season very early last season with round 1 CL fixtures. We played a hell of a lot of games last season. Let the **** moan, he's frightened of us and Rafa and so he should be

I'm not making excuses for Mourinho mate, though it's fair to say they looked laclustre and far from firing on all cylinders. They'll be a different proposition in the league.

Pretty much all of your post is spot-on. We're still underdogs... and expecting to win the league may end up being a problem (much liek England with the WC).

We have a lot of work to do, and the fixtures against the top 3 have to go our way.

I for one, can't wait, and think it' going to be an interesting contest.

Another good post, but I have to add my two pennys. Yes we played well and were stronger than them in most area's of the park, however I don't think we were even near up to full speed, and that was the worst performance of a Chelsea side I have seen for a long time. I personally wouldn't read too much in to the victory, and I don't think both of the teams will either.
It's always nice to beat them but lets just put it in to context and focus on the game at the weekend. That's when the important stuff starts in ernest.

Good stuff Mark, and you're quite right about Duff, Gudjohnsen and Crespo. I was saying to a Manure fan in my office yesterday that these players used to scare the ****e out of me. And now they are gone. I can't, thus far, see how Chelsea have impoved at all during the break. I could easily be proven wrong, but they appear to have deconstructed a winning formula. Maybe they'll replace it with a new one. But they also may not.

As for us: I don't think we're going to be bringing in a goal-poacher, Mark. Unless it's Huntelaar - and that'll be at Chrimbo.

Rafa obviously wants Kuyt/Klose as a better option at target man. Crouch won't be going anywhere for the time being. He is still our best option to lead the line in Rafa's favoured 4231/4411, despite his lack of mobility.

If Bellers really can "put it on his head from anywhere", then I dare say he'll score a few more goals. Because that cross was treats. Nevertheless, ANY manager would want better than Crouch ultimately, because his flaws are too often too significant.

Anyway, what I am pointing out is that Rafa wants the same kind of player, just maybe a bit more of an all rounder. He likes to play with two "foils", foiling for each other, rather than a poacher and the choice of a link or target man. Therefore he needs a 1st choice pairing who are pretty prolific, despite the fact that they may not be described as out-and-out goalscorers.

If he gets one, and we are able to dominate up and down the pitch like we've shown glimpses of last season and against the Chavs the other day, it will probably be good enough.

But because I reckon this kid could do your target man and score buckets at the same time, I just hope Rafa puts Huntelaar in our stocking during the festive transfer window.

Huntelaar would be great but I just think it's a pipedream (unfortunately).. As for my comment about a box player, maybe that was an exageration, I don't think we particularly need a 'fox in the box' (and it's not usually what Rafa goes for) I just think Kuyt reads the game better and is more prolific as a target man than Crouch. I think he'd be a huge difference to the squad. He'd made a good foil for Bellamy and vise versa.

What Chelsea have done is removed defensive strength and width from the midfield. It might work against the lesser teams, but against us, now, that's suicide.

I dare say though, if Makelele and Cole were fit, both those players would have had an impact on the game in their favour. But I don't buy the stuff about our players having more fitness than theirs. At least not because of matches. That's just Mourinho wagging his chin.

Right, I'm with you. Yep, we need to bring him in.

RE Huntelaar - Rafa likes Dutch players almost as much as Argies (probably something to do with his age?) so I'm just gonna hope a bit about the Klaas one. Cos he's going to go somewhere and be special. Maybe Atletico will sign him as a foil for Aguero (can you imagine?).

Another great post from you Mark. I believe if Rafa can keep the players sharp and focused all season aswell as bringing in another striker and a right sided option i.e Alves we can push Chelsea all the way.
