Ok, so tomorrow it's PSV at Anfield and if we finish the job, which should merely be a formality, the prospect of facing Chelsea in the CL semi and a potential final against the Scum in Athens looms large on the horizon. We need to take advantage of every single thing in our favour to make sure we overcome these hurdles and lift Number 6.
So we have 6 league games left, against Man City, Portsmouth and Fulham away, Boro, Wigan and Charlton at home. We're 4 points ahead of Arsenal and 6 ahead of Bolton in 5th who have played a game more and still have to play Chelsea and Arsenal away. I dont give a damn about finishing above Arsenal or finishing 3rd, as long as we get a top 4 place that's all that matters. With the combination of our fixtures, Bolton's fixtures and the points difference this is well within our grasp even if we rest the occasional first team player. As long as we win our remaining home games, we will finish in the top 4.
We need to take advantage of the fact that we have very little to play for domestically, that our fixtures on the whole will be meaningless provided we pick up points in the next 2-3 games. On the other hand, Chelsea and Man U have packed schedules over the next month, with high pressure games and their squads tested to the limit what with injuries and suspensions. They're both going for the title and the Cup as well as playing in Europe. They will be constantly involved in a battle against each other, trying to at least equal or better the other team's result. We need to take advantage of this.
With them stretched to the limit and us with a comparatively stress-free run-in, it's time for us to focus all our resources exclusively towards winning Number 6. Time to rotate Gerrard and Carragher, no point risking key players in meaningless games, especially prior to the big European games. Give some of the fringe players a little more playing time and focus solely on doing the business in Europe. At this stage of the season, there's too little to gain from trying to pick up points in league games we should be winning anyway and risking injury or burn out to players who have already played a lot of games this season.
It's time to have the target firmly in our sights, and go out and do it.
