I bet the price if he moves is much less than that if he moves. Still, I think the rest of Brendans argument is solid.

He is a really good player but would he replace Alonso or Sissoko in the first 11 - I wouldn't think so. He would have been a really good signing a few years ago when the rumours were about that we were interested.

I think if we are to buy in another midfielder they need to be someone cheap with potential to grow into giving competition. For this season I think Zenden or Stevie could cover in one of the two defensive midfield slots more than competantly.

Initially he was seen as being not good enough for the England team, one (and only one) half decent performance at the World cup and suddenly he was the England player of the tournament. Truth is he's just OK - pretty good as a defensive midfielder, but he goes missing with startling regularity and has plenty of 'off days' - he reminds me off Danny Murphy in some ways - never going to be a world beater, but on a good day he's generally solid and dependable. However, even if he was a lot better than he is he still wouldn't get a game in our midfield with the talent we have - he would just be a waste of cash for us...

Bit harsh on hargreaves.....howmany times has he played the holding midfielder role for england? he isnt a right back or wide midfielder.

Has always looked good when I have seen him for bayern (not an enormous amount mind). I think that he is a very efficient passer who always takes up good positions (reminds me of a slightly less disciplined Makellele). I don't think we need him but he is class.

He's not as good a central midfielder as Sisoko, Alonso or Gerrard, I don't think his price would justify him fighting to be 4th choice alongside Zenden.

If we had the money and didnt need stregthening in other areas then yes, he would be a good buy, but he is not one that would make much sense at this moment, although eh would be a fantastic addition to the squad.
