The verbal feud between Rafael Benítez and Jose Mourinho rumbled on last night after Liverpool's manager claimed the Portuguese made "a big mistake" to imply that Liverpool were little more than a cup team. Mourinho had stated in the build-up to this week's Champions League semi-final first leg, won 1-0 by Chelsea, that while Liverpool were historically "a monster", there were a great team only "in knock-out competitions". "I think Mourinho has made a big mistake by talking about the history of our club," said Benítez.

"Our history is massive. He can't say anything about it. In the last three years alone we've won four trophies. When you have a very good squad, and some of the best players in the world, I don't think you need to do these things. But that's his style, and everybody knows about it. I have friends in Portugal who know what he's like. We're playing Chelsea again in a few days, so I don't want to talk about these mind games."

Meanwhile, Chelsea assistant Steve Clarke insisted Mourinho was coping with the pressure. "He's not paranoid and he's not going to crack up," Clarke said. "He copes very well. We are all in control and enjoying what we are doing. He is honest and says what he thinks."
